The Division of Wildlife Resources stopped by Castle Country Radio to talk about ice fishing season coming to an end, community fishing ponds and an online turkey hunting clinic.

“You know around the Energy Loop some of our bigger bodies of water are starting to thaw actually. We’re getting some open water up on Electric and up on Mammoth but Scofield is still a pretty decent spot to go ice fishing if you want to get out and about. There down on the southeast end by the dam, ice is still thick, people are still catching fish,” said Conservation Outreach Manager, Aaron Bott. Generally, in Emery and Carbon counties the ice melts off mid-April so anglers can hit the open waters around that time.

The community ponds are no longer iced over and should be opening soon to the public. “Here at the fairgrounds and down at Knight Ideal Pond in Wellington we do gate those off the county helps us with that. In the wintertime they freeze over but now they are clear of ice so they should be opening pretty soon. In Helper you can go fishing right now out on the community pond and because the bodies of water are small there’s a lot of winter kill but people are actually catching fish, not a lot but there is fish there,” explained Bott. The Carbon County Fairgrounds Pond and Knight Ideal Pond should both be open sometime in April.

The DWR will be hosting a Turkey Hunting Seminar on Friday, April 9 at 6:00 pm and Bott shares all the details, “Well we’re really excited about this its an online Turkey Hunting Clinic. It covers the basics, its great for Q&A, for beginners and also for those who have been in the sport for a long time. This is going to be broadcast statewide which is why we are so excited about it but we’re going to host it here locally with our own Division employees.” Individuals that are interested in the clinic can register by visiting https://www.eventbrite.com/e/virtual-turkey-hunting-clinic-tickets-143844588035
