Carbon High School has named Cami Carlson head coach of the girl’s basketball program, it was announced Monday by principal Chris Winfree.

Carlson, who previously served as head coach of the program from 2006 to 2011, has spent the last two years as an assistant for the boy’s program. The vacancy was created when former head coach Ted Bianco retired this past February.

“I’ve been coaching with the boy’s program for a couple of years now and that gave me more excitement to get back into it,” said Carlson. “I really admire coach Butler and I had a great time coaching the boys.”

During her first stint as head coach Carlson accumulated a record of 86-30 in five seasons. In 2011 the Lady Dinos advanced to the 3A State Championship, falling short of the ultimate goal in a loss to Emery.

Carlson resigned before the start of the next basketball season to fulfill other professional duties. She returned to the sidelines as an assistant coach for Jared Butler, coaching the junior varsity team for the past two seasons.

“Being with the boys program allowed me to watch the girls more closely and they have a great program,” Carlson said. “I feel like I have something to offer to this young team and contribute to the success that coach Bianco already started. I hope to just build on what he’s already started.”

Carlson will take over a team that is expected to return all but two varsity players from last year’s squad. Carbon finished fourth overall at the 3A State Tournament, earning playoff wins over Summit Academy and Richfield, before losing to the eventual state champion Morgan Trojans.

The next step will be for Carlson to fill out her coaching staff. The district is expected to open the application portal for those interested in the coming days.
