The Utah High School Activities Association released the initial RPI rankings for the 2021 season. The Carbon Dinos enter at No. 11 with the Emery Spartans two spots behind at N0. 13. Delta sits atop the ranking followed by Manti, Grand County, Morgan and Judge Memorial rounding out the top 5.
The Dinos carry a 4-4 record this season and have faced the No. 3 team Grand once already, falling 2-0 back on March 25. On Thursday they will face Richfield looking for a season sweep. The remainder of their schedule is against Region 12 competition leading to the first round of the 3A playoffs.
The Emery Spartans have a record of 5-6-1 . Emery has four games remaining on their schedule. A date with Richfield awaits when they return from Spring Break on April 13. Then home games with Carbon (April 15) and San Juan (April 20) before they end the season on the road in Moab to take on Grand.
Rankings will now be updated at the completion of each regular season game leading up to the final week of region play.
The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
