The Lady Dinos continued their play Thursday in the 3A State Championship Tournament in Spanish Fork. Falling into the one-loss bracket after losing to Grand, Carbon will have to win out in the remainder of their games for the weekend to claim a State Championship.

Playing Grand for the third time this season, Carbon was unsuccessful in taking the rubber match on Thursday, falling 7-3. Moving into the lower part of the bracket makes it much more difficult, but not impossible to come out on the top of 3A.

Following the loss, the Dinos jumped right back into the action taking on Providence Hall and North Sanpete in the afternoon, winning both games in five innings and moving on in the tournament.

Below is a  recap of the final two games from Thursday:

Providence Hall- Win- 14-1 in five innings

Their first match-up came just a few hours after the Grand loss against No. 11 Providence Hall.  Carbon really put the game away early, scoring 13 runs in the first two innings. A Lyndsey Madrigal three run shot over the fence in left in the first and in the second, Gianna Bruno came to the plate with bases loaded and took one deep to left for a grand slam accounted for half the scoring.

Brooke Moosman and the Carbon defense were in complete control in the contest allowing only three hits, all singles. Moosman surrendered just one earned run and struck out three batters.

Bruno went 1-of-2 from the plate with four RBI’s. Madrigal was 1-of-2 scoring two runs and driving in three. Six other Dinos collected at least one hit in the win.

North Sanpete- Win- 12-1 in five innings

After making quick work of Providence Hall, the Dinos would change their focus to the No. 7 North Sanpete Hawks. These two teams faced each other on April 28 with Carbon coming out on top 4-0. The Dinos started quickly once again scoring five runs in the first inning and then brought the game to a early end scoring another five in the bottom of the fifth going up by 11 ending the game and moving on in the playoffs.

Madrigal would come to the plate with two on in the bottom of the first and send another deep to center for her second home run of the day. In the fifth with two outs and Carbon feeling the strain from playing their third game in seven hours, the Dinos dug in and rallied to put five more runs on the board ending the contest.

Madrigal was 2-of-3 scoring three runs and driving in four. Moosman went 3-of-4 driving in two. Three other Dinos registered multiple hits in the victory.

On the mound for Carbon, Haven Byerly turned in another dominating performance, getting the complete game giving up one run on one hit and fanning nine Hawks.

Up next for the Dinos will be No.2  South Summit at 12:15. A loss sends them home but a win would put them back on the field to face the winner of the Emery and Grand game at 2:30.

All games are taking place at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex until Saturday, when a new State Champion will be crowned.
