The Carbon School District will be hosting a Summer Learning Program for their students this summer. Representatives, Stacy Basinger and Mika Salas stopped by Castle Country Radio to talk about the program.

“Well we received the opportunity with some funding to provide a summer learning program that’s going to target students who need to gain and we also want to help them maintain those essential reading and math skills that they’ve worked hard on this year,” said Basinger.  The summer program is open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. It is set to begin on June 14 till the week of July 26 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at each of the elementary schools.

Secondary schools will be by invitation only where the schools will contact students that are in need of assistance. “The secondary are targeted a little bit more with students who may need a little extra help. So each middle school and Carbon High School will be reaching out to students individually, it will be more of an invitation-type setting, where they will be notifying parents and students that this opportunity is available,” said Salas. This is geared towards students who need assistance with basic reading and math skills or high schoolers needing to make up credits. Due to construction at Helper Middle School and Carbon High School this summer there will be no programs held at these schools. However, any Helper Middle School students attending the Summer Learning Program will go to Sally Mauro Elementary and Carbon High School students will go to Mont Harmon Middle School for their summer programs.

Students in grades kindergarten and fifth grade will register online for the Summer Learning Program. “So currently on the district website and each of the school sites on their banner, right on the main page, there is a link for registration for the Summer Learning Program. They just need to click on that to provide us the basics, their student’s name and grade, and the school they intend to bring their child to through the summer and then their parent contact information. By completing that form, their student is registered,” stated Basinger. This is a free Summer Learning Program where there are no fees involved due to the special funding the district has received.

School officials will try to keep students together as per grade level. “Our goal is yes, to have individual classrooms and maybe its not necessarily all kindergarten, all first grade, it could be some ability-based grouping part of the time, we really are just targeting their skill needs. It’s not just everybody that comes, comes to the gym, and it’s a babysitting session – it’s absolutely not a babysitting session, it is a learning opportunity,” said Basinger. Parents that would like more information about the Summer Learning Program can contact the Carbon School District Office at (435) 637-1732.
