Its time for another Ferron City Update with Mayor Adele Justice. She was eager to talk over the telephone about water conservation and grants the city has obtained.
“Ferron has been put in a pretty critical water situation this year because of the project on our dam. We started out with less water than normal and we’re getting less than normal projected to come into our reservoir this year. So this is probably the worst drought situation we’ve been in, in many, many years and the second worst in 70 years,” stated Mayor Justice. Because of the water situation the city is facing they called a town meeting to discuss water conversation and projection of water coming into the dam. They discussed the need to continue to water gardens and trees but to taper back on watering lawns at this time.
The city has put out a campaign that “Brown Is the New Green” and citizens have been gladly participating with the city’s new slogan at this time. “It’s been a great campaign this week. We’ve actually dropped our outside water usage by 11-acre feet which is huge for us and gives us a couple more weeks of watering this summer if we continue to keep that usage down,” stated Mayor Justice. She appreciates all the efforts that each citizen is doing to help with water conservation within each household. It’s the little things like turning water off when brushing teeth, shorter showers, reusing bath water to water outside plants/shrubs. The city along with its citizens are posting on their Facebook page different ideas/tips to help with water conservation.
The city recently received an OHV trail and advertising of trails grant which at first the city didn’t think they were awarded but once they were reevaluated the city then got notification that they did in deed received both grants. “So we will be working on those soon. We’ll have a group of ATV riders that will go out and ride the trails and take video of that so we can get that digitalized. People can actually log on and see those trails and see what they would be riding before they actually go out and hit the trails. The other grant again would give us some great advertising,” stated Mayor Justice. The unique thing about the trails near Ferron is that you can embark on your trip right from town because the trails are easily assessable from city limits.
The telephone call with Mayor Justice couldn’t end without talking about the city’s Peach Days Celebration, “We are still on track with Peach Days. We’re going to have a great event. We’re still in some of the planning stages, we haven’t solidified a couple of the activities. But we start with a week-long celebration. So every single day beginning on Labor Day, the day after Labor Day actually, we will start with events and we will have an event every day.” Peach Days is scheduled to take place September 7 through September 11.
