The Helper’s Mining & Railroad Museum is excited to be hosting an exhibit that is entitled “Railfan” and it will feature photos of various trains in and around the local area.

“We’ll you know I have people that come into the museum that kind of come down to Helper just to do that and then they stop a the museum you know so this is kind of a genre of photography that I really wasn’t familiar with and I was surprised at how much was going on with that and how big of a draw this area is and it just seemed like an obvious theme for the museum here and we thought we’d get a lot of interest and we have,” said Museum Assistant, Jason Huntzinger. The exhibit will be on display the entire month of July and up to the Helper’s Arts Festival on August 21.

There are a few photos that have come from other states that made the exhibit. “Quite a range, some locals, but definitely a lot from Utah photographers that kind of come to this area to make those photographs and it’s not just restricted to just Price Canyon and Helper area, although that’s the ballfield that we have. But we also have photographs from Nevada, California railways. So it’s a really nice range of stuff that we have for the show,” said Huntzinger. The exhibit will feature black and white as well as colored photos.

There will even be an opportunity for guests to choose their favorite photo and it will be given an award during the Helper’s Art Festival. “Kind of tying this into arts festival, we got arts festival the third week in August. If you come in to view the exhibit you can vote on your favorite images so I think we’ll probably have first, second and third place and you can drop your vote into a box here and then we’ll announce the winners on arts festival and kind of make a big deal out of that,” stated Huntzinger.

The business hours for the museum are Monday through Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and they are located at 294 South Main Street in Helper. “We would love for you to see the museum as a whole. But if you just want to come in to take a look at the exhibit that’s fine. We’ve been doing $8.00 a person or $20.00 a family to go through the museum but you’re just welcomed to come in a take a look at the exhibit and the beautiful WPA art gallery that we have here right on the first floor,” said Huntzinger. If you have any questions about the exhibit, you can contact the museum at (435) 472-3009.
