The Emery Spartans opened the high school golf season with a third-place finish in the first Region 12 meet of the season Wednesday afternoon in Cedar City at Cedar Ridge.

Trevin Wakefield shot a team low 83 as the Spartans finished with a 356 overall. Wakefield’s individual performance was enough for him to land a spot inside the top 10 leaderboard.

The Richfield Wildcats took home first place as they combined for a 324. Carbon ended just behind in second with a 329. Emery managed to top the home squad Canyon View, who finished fourth with a 372, followed by Grand in last.

Kavery Killpack was second on the team for Emery as he shot an 86. The final two scores went to Joey Leonard and Kade Larsen who shot a 93 and 94. Carter Huntington, Tayten Reid, Logan Riley and Alex Hansen all participated, but did not have final scores count towards the team’s total.

With the first meet now in the books the Spartans will shift their focus to Tuesday’s trip to Quirrh Hills, the site of this year’s state championship on Oct. 6 and 7.
