Green River baseball has had a rough beginning to the season, carrying a 1-5 record into their meeting with Diamond Ranch Academy on Wednesday at home. When the dust settled the Pirates would add another to the loss column falling in the contest 12-2.
This would be the second time these two teams have met in this very young season. Back on August 11, Diamond Ranch claimed the 9-3 win at the 1A Preview Tournament in Richfield.
The Green River bats were cold early and Diamond Ranch would take advantage, scoring 10 runs in the first three innings. The fourth inning was quiet for both teams and in the top of the fifth, Diamond Ranch would put pressure on the Pirates scoring three runs pushing the score to 13-0. In the bottom of the inning Hoyt Hunt would move runners around the bases with a double to left and Jordan Anderson would come up three batters later sending a double to center bringing in the only runs for the Pirates and the game went final after five innings.
Offensively for the Pirates, Hunt collected one hit and a run while Anderson also had a hit and brought in two runs.
On the mound, it was Jay Mendez getting the start going 2 2/3 innings giving up nine runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out five. Cristian Venzor entered the game putting in 2 1/3 innings of work, and surrendered three runs (two earned) on four hits striking out three.
The Pirates will welcome Valley to Green River on Friday. The first pitch will be thrown at 3:00.
