This week’s Carbon School District updates shines a spotlight on Castle Heights Elementary. Principal Wendy Fluckey took time to speak over the telephone with Castle Country Radio to discuss summer school, emphasis on mathematics skills and new faculty members.
Over the summer the district had some COVID funds/grants available that they decided to offer students some extra educational help during the summer months. “So we did have summer school program that ran through the middle of June through the end of July and it was on a voluntary basis. We had quite a few parents that signed their kids up and it was Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of each week. The kids came in and they were able to continue to working on some of those math and reading programs that they had worked on throughout the school year,” stated Principal Fluckey.
Generally, when students leave for the summer break, they return to school a bit lagging in reading and math skills. But school officials are hoping that once data is gathered and compared to previous years that it will show that the summer school program was a huge success.
The school is about three weeks into the new school year and of course, the entire district is working on reading skills but they are also focusing on basic math skills. “As a staff we are also focusing on math and establishing a foundational skills in math with basic math facts. Just so that when students go to the next grade level they have their addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, concrete so that they’re able to move on. So we do have a focus on the math as well,” said Principal Fluckey. The school also has a behavioral focus for the year and the school wide theme is kindness.
With a new school year, it also brings in new faculty members as Principal Fluckey explains, “Our kindergarten teacher Mrs. White retired and so we have Kimberly Carver that is teaching kindergarten this year. Then in first grade we have Mrs. Lindsey Hansen that is co-teaching with Mrs. Madrid. So we’re excited to have those two.” There is also a new music teacher and her name is Mrs. Julie Woodhouse, which the school is very excited about.
