Creekview Elementary was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so Principal Keith Palmer stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss the school’s summer school program, reading and construction.

Creekview Elementary held a summer school program and are happy to report that it was a huge success. “We had over 100 kids registered, not all of them finished every week through but we had many of them that did. We’ve seen some really exciting results instead of a summer slide that we usually see we’ve actually seen some of those kids attended summer school being three or four levels ahead of what they were at the end of the year at the beginning of the year,” stated Principal Palmer. This shows that many of the students who attended the summer school program improved academically over the summer months.

Students returned for the new school year knowing that reading is the key focus for them. “We don’t have to talk to the teachers about all the efforts they need to be making they know and they want it. They’ve either seen the results and they keep pushing themselves, goal keeps getting higher and higher, so there’s still that push but it’s not like we are begging them to follow through and do certain things its just part of their classroom now they just do it, it’s great,” explained Principal Palmer. Both students and teachers are striving to reach the same goal which is to improve reading levels.

Many folks may have noticed the construction taking place at the school’s parking lot. “We only had 23 parking spots in our parking lot which meant that anytime we had any event it was bad. There was also no good way to for students to drop-off and pick-up kids. We hope this new parking lot its going to increase 112 parking spots but also have a lot more space for dropping-off and picking-up students so we hope is going to make things a lot easier,” said Principal Palmer. The completion of the construction project should be done in a week or two.

The next big event coming up for the school is Red Ribbon Week activities. “The PTA is working hard on getting that up and going and they’re gearing up again, they have had to taper back a few years of the things we had to not hold but they’re ready to go and that should be a fun activity for the kids,” stated Principal Palmer. The Red Ribbon Week event will be held in October and further information will be shared on the school’s Facebook page.
