Jackie Dale Butler, age 74, of Orangeville, Utah, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 in Orem, Utah surrounded by his loving family.

Jack was born on January 5, 1947 in Payson, Utah to Wesley Dale and Donna Myrtle Anderson Butler. He was the oldest of five children. Jack enjoyed a wonderful childhood upbringing in Spring Lake and graduated in 1965 from Payson High School.

Jack’s post high school plans quickly changed as he was drafted into the Army from 1966 through 1968, serving as a sergeant in the Vietnam War. Jack and his squadron operated an M55 Quad 50 used in the war for heavy artillery ground support during combat. Upon returning home from Vietnam Jack gained employment as a hard rock miner for Kennecott’s Burgin Mine in Eureka while also obtaining an associate degree at Utah Trade Tech.

Jack had an affinity for fast cars and racing dirt bikes. While dragging main street in Payson, Utah he pulled over in his shiny, yellow, Oldsmobile and swept Dianne Greenhalgh off her feet. They were married on February 21, 1970. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on April 9, 1977. Their love story grew as they quickly added six boys to their family. Jack was extremely proud of his sons and they each brought a great amount of joy into his life! Jack was an exemplary husband and father who was devoted to his family and his faith.

In 1979 when the mine closed, Jack worked briefly for the Department of Labor before moving his family to Orangeville, Utah where he began working underground in the Deer Creek Coal Mine. After a few years in the mine Jack landed an HR position with the company working above ground until he took an early retirement in 2002. He continued to work hard for another twelve years at various jobs including stucco and construction, car sales, mine equipment delivery, and also as a janitor for the Emery High School Event Center.

Jack was a valiant member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held several church callings with the young men’s organization, elders quorum, bishopric and high council, as well as a service missionary for the addiction recovery program. Jack and Dianne also enjoyed serving as Manti Temple workers. Jack’s favorite church calling was when the bishop asked him to regularly visit many of the elderly couples and widows in his ward. He truly loved everyone he met.

Jack enjoyed spending time with his wife and his large family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting. He loved attending his son’s and his grandchildren’s sporting events, dance competitions and extracurricular activities. He truly enjoyed serving his wife and he became an expert dishwasher and laundry assistant.

One of Jack’s most prized experiences was being chosen as a candidate for the Utah Honor Flight in 2018 as he was able to visit war memorials and our nation’s capital with his son, Dusty, as his escort.

Jack is survived by his eternal companion, Dianne Greenhalgh Butler; six sons, Blake (Tara) Butler of Aurora, Utah, Jared (Shanae) Butler of Orangeville, Utah, Dustin (Beth) Butler of Orangeville, Utah, Weston Butler of Richfield, Utah, Brennon (Justina) Butler of Orangeville, Utah and Brett (Britanie) Butler of Price, Utah; siblings, Joy Taylor, Lana Johnson, Randy Butler and Rex Butler; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
