The Emery Spartans and Carbon Dinos were separated by 0.008289 when all the numbers were calculated for the first RPI of the season. Emery holds a 2-5 record and Carbon 3-7, the RPI will be updated after every game from now until the last week of the season by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA), the final tabulation will be used for seeding in the state playoffs coming the middle of February.
Grantsville landed in the top spot with Morgan, North Sanpete, Ben Lomond and Juan Diego making up the rest of the top 5.
With their 2-5 record Emery is ahead of Carbon due to the teams they have played. Road games at No. 5 Juan Diego, and a win against No. 7 Juab and a home contest with No. 3 North Sanpete went a long way for the Spartans.
As for the Dinos losses at No. 3 North Sanpete and No. 7 Juab along with a loss to No. 2 Juab at the 3A Preview landed them right behind the Spartans.
The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
