This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Bruin Point Elementary where Second Grade Teacher, Joset Wells took time to speak over the telephone about the school’s reading project and Board of Education funding.

The school is hosting a reading project that is geared around the Valentines holiday. “So our kids are reading and for every 20 minutes of really good reading that they do at school, teachers are giving them a little heart that they are writing on, making a little Valentine out of it and giving it to Snoopy. They are competing for how many hearts they can get in their boxes of Valentines to Snoopy,” stated Mrs. Wells. The teachers are pleased with how the students are loving to read and compete in the competition.

The school recently received funding form the Board of Education and have used it to help the school. “The State Board of Education had some funding that they decided to allow teachers to really decide where it went. They partnered with DonorsChoose, which is a program that teachers can use to crowd source funding for projects, and gave each teacher up to $1,000.00 to help with whatever project we choose. So our teachers got together and we decided on some projects that we wanted to work on and one thing was last year we started a garden. It went well but we decided that it would be a whole lot easier to maintain and sustain that garden if we had some grow boxes. So we were able to order eight grow boxes, I believe, as well as a composter for our garden,” explained Mrs. Wells. Last year was the first year that the school implemented a garden. The garden is a great STEM tool for students to learn science and mathematics.

The school also used the money for some other items that the school needed. “We were able to buy a $1,000.00 worth of headphones, which is really going to be helpful. We have one Chromebook for each of our students, so having good headphones for them is essential. We were able to buy snap circuits, there a manipulative tool to help to build electrical circuits. But the ones that we bought also will associate with forces in motion, so they’re going to learn about how things move,” stated Mrs. Wells. The funding received helped the school with much needed items to help their students’ academics.
