The Dino boys baseball squad finished their 2022 campaign with an 18-10 overall record and a 10-2 Region 12 mark with landed them at the top of the conference. Carbon made their way to the final day of competition in the 3A State Baseball Championships falling to eventual runner up American Leadership Academy  14-11 on May 14 at Brent Brown Ballpark on the campus of Utah Valley University.

Below is a recap of games played this season.

March 11-12- St. George Tournament- Record 0-4

After falling to Grantsville in the championship round last season, the consensus among the members of the Carbon Dino baseball squad this season is anything less than a state championship is an underachievement. Opening the season in St. George for four games as part of the Desert Hills Invitational, Carbon jumped two classifications and faced four 5A teams, Salem Hills, Wasatch, Orem and Park City. The Dinos had a tough weekend losing all four contests.

Head coach Jeff Cisneros joined KOAL’s Drive Time Sports to talk about this year’s squad.

“This goes back to right after losing the state championship game last year and obviously throughout the entire summer, fall and winter workouts, was we just need to compete. We need to compete everyday amongst each other, we have a ton of talent coming back this year on paper, but if you don’t take that from paper to the baseball field it doesn’t mean a whole lot. We have a lot of guys who’ve seen a lot of varsity time, we have a group that was very successful this summer, our 17U team won the state American Legion title, our 19U team should have been playing for a state title, they ended up taking third, those kids played well got a lot of experience and for us for the high school season it’s just compete everyday.”

Below is a recap of all the games played in St. George.

Mar. 11- Salem Hills- Loss- 5-0

The Dinos started play bright and early on Friday morning, taking on the Salem Hills Skyhawks. Last season the Skyhawks ended their season in the championship round with back-to-back losses to eventual state champion Spanish Fork and are returning five starters from last years team. This season it looks as though they are ready for another run taking a 5-0 win over the Dinos.

Carbon had a hard time collecting hits in the game gathering just two in seven innings from the bats of Rylan Hart and Keaton Rich.

Jordan Fossat got the start on the mound going three innings giving up two earned on five hits including five strikeouts, Fossat was given the loss. The Dinos also used four other pitchers as  Maizen Pritchard, Rylan Hart, Chet Anderson and Keaton Rich all took turns on the hill.

Mar. 11- Wasatch- Loss- 8-3

Wasatch had their season come to an end at the hands of Olympus last season in the third round of the playoffs, ending the season at 15-12. Playing their first season under new coach MacKay Jacobsen the Wasps used a four run third inning to get on top of the Dinos and never looked back.

The Dinos were able to put up one run on the board in the first inning when Hart crossed the plate off a Rich pop out to first.  They would also add two more runs in the fourth as Beau Vea was able to score on a James Castro ground ball to third and then later on when Chet Anderson would score on a walk.

Vea started the game on the bump, going two innings allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in the loss. Dallen O’Neil would enter the game finishing out giving up four earned runs on four hits.

Mar. 12- Loss- Orem- 5-4

The Orem Tigers were the next team the Dinos would face on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers ended their 2021 season losing two in a row to state runner-up Maple Mountain in the championship round, finishing last season with a 21-12 record, they returned six players from last years squad.

This was a game that started slowly, with the Tigers putting the first runs on the board in the fourth and adding another taking a 3-0 lead into the top of the sixth.  Tacking on two more runs in the sixth inning. The Dinos found their offense in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs as Anderson, O’Neil, Payton Molinar and Hart would all cross the plate.

On the mound, Carbon gave the starting nod to Wyatt Falk, who went four innings giving up two earned on four hits while striking out three. Rich came into to finish out the game going two giving up three runs (one earned), on four hits and struck out one.

Mar. 12- Park City- Loss- 5-4

In the final game of the weekend Carbon faced the Park City Miners. The Miners lost to Bountiful in last years state playoffs in the second round, ending their season at 9-19.

Park City came out scoring at least one run in the first four innings, in fact they put up all of their runs in those innings and went cold the rest of the game.

The Dinos added one run in the second but the sixth inning rally came up just short as Rich scored on an Anderson single and Falk would score on a double play ball off the bat of  Ridge Nielsen.

Camden Wilson got the start and took the loss for the Dinos giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out four. Quade Henrie would enter going three and gave up two runs on three hits and struck out six.

March 15- Union- Win- 8-4

James Castro went 1-2 with two RBI’s and Dallen O’Neil went 2-3 with two runs, as the Dinos totaled eight hits and eight runs on Tuesday when they welcomed the Union Cougars to Price, getting their first win in Carbon’s home opener, 8-4.

The Dinos now sit at 1-4 on the early season after having a rough weekend in St. George at the Desert Hill Summit Invite as they faced competition from the 5A ranks.

Against Union, Carbon was playing on their home field for the first time all season and looked ready for whatever Union had to dish out. The Cougars put one run on the board in the top of the first inning, as Coy Jackson sent a fly ball over the left field fence.

Carbon answered back in the next two innings putting three runs up as O’Neil, Rylan Hart and Keaton Rich crossed the plate. A single and back-to-back errors in the fourth inning put three more runs on the board for the Dinos and helped them put away the Cougars.

Rich and O’Neil both had two hits and Jordan Fossat, Beau Vea, Jacob Vasquez and Castro each collected one in the Carbon win.

On the mound the Dinos used two pitchers in allowing the Cougars five hits.

Vasquez got the start and earned the win going four innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and struck out four. Vea came in, going three with two earned on two hits and striking out three.

March 16- Tooele- Win- 6-2

Coming off a win at home over Union on Tuesday, the Dinos headed back out on the road to face the Tooele Buffaloes on Wednesday. Playing the fifth 5A team since since last Friday the Dinos spread 10 hits across seven innings putting up six runs and taking the win 6-2.

Camden Wilson pitched six scoreless innings relying on his teammates to back him up as he surrendered six hits,  Dallen O’Neil came in to finish off the Buffaloes, getting the final two outs of the contest.

The Dinos got on the board in the first inning when Wyatt Falk hit a double to right field scoring Keaton Rich, who reached on a single into center. Later in the inning Falk would cross the plate thanks to a Chet Anderson single.

Both teams bats went quiet until the top of the fifth when Carbon would put up one run in the fifth and again in the sixth.

In the top of the seventh the Dinos scored two more times, once when Keaton Rich scored off a Jordan Fossat double. Two batters later Quade Henrie hit a single that allowed Fossat to score.

Fossat went 2-3 in the game with an RBI and two runs, Jacob Vasquez was 2-3 in the contest as well for the Dinos, who put back-to-back wins together moving their record to 2-4.

March 18- Bountiful- Loss 5-4

Three outs away from the third win of the season, the Carbon Dinos suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to 5A Bountiful on a walk off three-run home run on the road Friday afternoon.

Clinging to a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Dinos allowed the first two runners to safely reach. Bountiful’s Dallin Maxwell ended the game with a home run over the left field wall off of senior Jordan Fossat.

The walk-off shot was Bountiful’s first and only lead of the game. Despite out hitting their opponent 13-6, runs came at a premium for the Dinos throughout the contest.

Carbon’s offense set the early tone as Keaton Rich brought in Rylan Hart with a two run home run in the second at bat of the first inning. Hart would later bring in one run in the second inning as he scored Beau Vea on an infield ground out.

Bountiful scored one run in the third and another in the fifth to chop the Carbon advantage to one run entering the sixth. The Dinos answered by scoring for the first time since the second inning as Dallen O’Neil scored James Castro on a double to center field.

A Carbon scoreless top half of the seventh set the stage for Maxwell’s walk off to give Bountiful the win.

Wyatt Falk pitched a solid 4.2 innings for the Dinos, allowing just four hits and one earned run, while also fanning four batters. Fossat pitched the final 1.1 in relief as he allowed two hits to go along with one strikeout.

Falk helped his own cause at the plate as he ended the game 2-4 with two singles. Hart logged a single, double and triple as he ended 3-4 with one RBI. O’Neil also ended with three hits as he finished 3-3 with a double and one RBI. Vea and Chet Anderson both recorded two hits a piece.

The Dinos now sit 2-5 on the young season as they continue to go through a challenging non-region schedule. Of the seven games played so far this season only one has been against 3A competition.

March 22- Judge Memorial- Win 16-2

Needing just five innings to take care of business on Tuesday, the Carbon Dinos sluggers put up 10 runs in the third that spelled the end for the Judge Memorial Bulldogs at the high school baseball field.

Five Dinos had two RBI’s each and seven player registered at least one hit in a contest where Carbon scattered nine hits and the Bulldogs registered nine errors.

Judge scored the first run in the game from a triple to center in the top of the first from the bat of Aaydan Saucedo, then the bulldog bats would go quiet until the top of the fifth thanks in part to the Dinos Beau Vea who collected the win giving up six hits and two earned while striking out four.

The third was all Dinos, heading into the inning up 2-1 the Dinos collected six hits, four of which were doubles and five walks as they put 10 runs on the score more none more exciting than during Braxtin Henrie’s second at bat of the inning when Colton Lowe would score on a wild pitch and then Henrie would send a double to right field that brought in Dallen O’Neil.

Carbon went back to work in the fourth when Judge would help them out walk three batters and committing three errors that was responsible for three runs the other came from the bat of Lowe whose single brought in Rylan Hart.

Headed into the top of the fifth with the game well in hand the Dinos surrendered just one run and close out the Bulldogs in five.

The Dinos are starting to find their groove moving their record to 3-5 overall. The pre-season schedule will end on Wednesday when Juab comes to Price.

March 23- Juab- Win- 16-6

Keaton Rich’s triple in the first inning got things going for the Dinos as they put up seven runs against the Juab Wasps on Wednesday in Price. The Wasps would get to with in four at one point but that was as close as Juab would get and the Dinos walked away with a 16-6 win in five innings.

Rich went 3-4 and Chet Anderson 3-3 as the Dinos took on Juab, a team that the Deseret News had named as the No.1 team in 3A.  The Dinos forced the Wasps to use four different pitchers as they collected 11 hits and frustrated Juab into committing seven errors.

In the first inning after Rylan Hart scored on the Rich triple, he came home on an error by the catcher as Carbon would bat through the line-up in the inning. Maizen Prichard would cross the plate after a double putting the seventh run on the board.

Juab played through the next couple of innings cautiously putting up a couple runs in the second and then would try to get something going in the fourth when Carbon pitcher Wyatt Falk started the inning by loading the bases giving up a double, a walk and a hit batsman. He would then work his way back surrendering four runs before getting out of the inning. Falk would go 3.2 innings giving up six runs (four earned) on four hits and struck out four. Jordan Fossat went 1.1 surrendering two hits and struck out one.

In the bottom of the fifth, Juab would throw their fourth pitcher at the Dinos, who would enter and give up a double to Rich, back-to-back walks and then Anderson was hit by a pitch bringing home a run. In the next at bat Colton Lowe would single on a fly ball to center allowing Fossat to score and ending the game for the Dinos.

Carbon now sits at 4-5 and will take the weekend to prepare for region play which will begin on Mar. 29 with a double header against Grand at home. They will then follow-up with a road game in Moab on Friday, this will be the region format this year, they will play each region foe three times, the first time in a double header and then they will play one game on the other teams home field.

March 29- Grand- Double Header- 2-0

The Carbon Dinos opened Region 12 play with an offensive explosion Wednesday afternoon, easily sweeping a double-header with the Grand Red Devils in front of the home crowd at Carbon High School.

Originally scheduled to start division play on Tuesday, inclement weather pushed the double-header back to Wednesday. The extra day was worth the wait for spectators as they watched the Dinos earn a dominating 31-1 victory in game one, followed by a 22-5 victory in game two.

Wyatt Falk allowed just one base runner as he pitched a scoreless and hit-less three innings to set tone in the field for the Dinos. It took Falk only 60 pitches to record four strikeouts and set up Dallen O’Neil for a relief appearance in the top of the fourth to close out the game.

Falk’s dominance on the mound was matched with instant run support as Carbon posted 10 runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Rylan Hart started the at bat with a lead off single and was quickly joined on base by Keaton Rich and Jordan Fossat on eight straight balls. Colton Lowe plated the first two runs of the game with a double to deep center field.

The score remained 10-0 entering the bottom of the third, but the Dinos quickly turned the game into an absolute blowout. A total of 22 consecutive batters reached safely as Carbon scored 21 runs in the longest inning of the season. The top of the fourth was a mere formality as the team earned its third consecutive victory.

Lowe ended 3-4 at the plate as he brought in four runs to go along with one walk. Fossat matched Lowe’s total of four RBIs as 12 different players brought in runs for the Dinos. As a team Carbon recorded 26 RBIs, 15 hits and 11 walks.

The success in the first game carried over into the second of the double-header as Carbon once again ended Grand by the mercy rule, this time in five innings.

Jumping out to a 7-0 lead entering the third inning, the Red Devils found a bit of success by scoring four runs in the top half. Grand added one more in the top of the fourth to chop the Carbon advantage to two, but the Dinos quickly responded to put the game away for good.

Rich started the bottom of the fourth with a triple to right field and scored four pitches later as Fossat singled to the same part of the diamond. The quick start was contagious for the rest of the lineup as Carbon scored 15 runs before being retired.

Two triples led to a team-high six RBIs for Lowe in the second game of the afternoon as he finished a perfect 2-2 at the dish. Rylan Hart plated four runs with a single and a triple in three at bats, while Jacob Vasquez finished 1-2 with three RBIs.

Fossat earned the win on the mound as he tossed four innings, striking out six batters and allowing four runs on four hits. Camden Wilson pitched the top half of the fifth giving up just one hit to close out the win.

April 1- Grand- Win- 4-0

Coming off a huge offensive effort where they scored 53 runs in a double header against Grand earlier last week in Price, the Dinos traveled to Moab last Friday to face the Red Devils on their home field taking the season sweep 4-0.  Then on Monday they were on the road again in Vernal taking on 5A Uintah dropping that contest 6-2.

After the two games the Dinos sit at 7-6 overall and 3-0 in league play. Carbon has scheduled teams out of their classification for majority of their non-region contests and when the RPI came out last Friday, Carbon was sitting in the No. 5 spot, the rankings are updated daily and after the loss to Uintah they dropped two spot to No. 7.

The Dinos got on the board quickly in the first inning against Grand,  when Keaton Rich, who registered a hit and two runs in the contest, stole home. After that runs were at a premium for the Dinos who put up one run in the third and then two more in the fifth.

Defensively, Carbon used great work in the field as well as the duo of Jacob Vasquez and Beau Vea on the mound who combined for the four hit shutout, striking out 10 batters.

Offensively the Dinos were only able to collect five hits in the game but thanks to their work in the field, they were able to come away with the region win.

April 4- Uintah- Loss- 6-2

Coming off a huge offensive effort where they scored 53 runs in a double header against Grand earlier last week in Price, the Dinos traveled to Moab last Friday to face the Red Devils on their home field taking the season sweep 4-0.  Then on Monday they were on the road again in Vernal taking on 5A Uintah dropping that contest 6-2.

On Monday in Vernal, Carbon faced the Uintah Utes, who entered the game as the No. 21 team in 5A with a record of 4-8.

It wasn’t until the third inning when Carbon was able to put it’s only two runs on the board on back-to-back hits from the bats of Rylan Hart and Keaton Rich that allowed Dallen O’Neil and Hart to score, cutting the Uintah lead in half 4-2.

Jordan Fossat got the start on the mound going four innings giving up four runs (one earned) on two hits and struck out five. Oneil came in putting in two innings of work giving up two runs on one hit and striking out two.

April 13- Alta- Win- 12-0

Dallen O’Neil threw five innings of scoreless baseball on Wednesday at the Carbon Field as the Dinos made quick work of the 5A Alta Hawks 12-0. The offense was clicking for Carbon as well with seven Dinos connecting for nine hits in the contest.

O’Neil was on from the beginning, facing the minimum amount of batters through the first three innings. Oneil gave up his first hit, a triple in the fourth, but the Carbon defense had his back allowing him to get the complete game surrendering just two hits while striking out four.

Offensively the Dinos would get it started in the first when Rylan Hart and Keaton Rich would score on errors. With two outs in the inning, Chet Anderson stepped up to the plate and sent one deep over the center field wall for a two-run shot that brought Jordan Fossat home.

Things got going again for the Dinos in the third when Fossat drove Rich home with a single and then scoring wouldn’t stop until Peyton Molinar added the sixth run of the inning for Carbon on an error on the Alta catcher Kalem Thatcher. Colton Lowe, who ended the game with a pair of hits with two runs and added an RBI, smashed a home run over the right field wall.

Anderson ended the day with two hits, two runs and three RBI’s, Jacob Vasquez also had a three RBI day with one hit.

The Dinos traveled to Cedar City to face the Canyon View Falcons, ranked at No. 2 in the state RPI. Meeting for the first time and playing in a double-header, the Dinos would end up splitting the games winning the first 7-4 and dropping the second 8-5.

Game one saw Carbon put runs on the board in the first inning, and then both teams went silent offensively until the bottom of the fourth inning when Canyon View added one of their own.

In the top of the fifth and sixth innings Carbon put up two runs in each. Defensively, the Dinos gave up just three more runs taking the 7-4 victory.

April 19- Emery- Double Header- 2-0

The Carbon Dinos scored a total of 23 runs in their doubleheader sweep of the Emery Spartans, winning 11-0 and 12-8.

The Dinos dominated from the very beginning of game one as Carbon had complete control on offense and defense. Jacob Vasquez got the start on the mound and threw all seven innings for the Dinos. Vasquez allowed eight hits but did not allow a single run to cross the plate for Emery. Rylan Hart and Beau Vea led the Dinos with two RBIs each. Hart, Keaton Rich, Jordan Fossat and Dallen O’Neil each recorded multi-hit games for the Dinos.

Trevin Wakefield was the starting pitcher for the Emery Spartans. Wakefield tossed five innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three strikeouts. Ty Stilson appeared in the game for Emery to throw the final two innings. Stilson allowed seven runs, five earned, on six hits and three walks.

Carbon scored two runs in the top of the second inning to set the tone. The Dinos would go on to add one run in the fourth and fifth innings before they unleashed an onslaught of five runs in the sixth inning. Unable to muster any offense, the Spartans greatest downfall was the inability to drive in runners who were in scoring position. The Spartans were able to manage eight hits in the game but stopped themselves during attempts to start rallies.

Emery came out firing in game two of the doubleheader as they opened scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Oakley Alton.

Carbon and Emery traded runs in the third inning as Rylan Hart drove in a run for Carbon and Alton added his second RBI of the game as he reached on an error to bring in a run.

Carbon added two runs in the top of the fourth after Ridge Nelson and Jacob Vasquez knocked in two runs. Emery, however, would respond immediately with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. The Spartans strung together four straight singles to drive in four runs and retain a 6-3 lead.

Carbon added one run in the top of the fifth on a Jordan Fossat RBI double before adding another five runs in the top of the sixth. The Dinos batted around as every player in the lineup stepped into the batter’s box. Jacob Vasquez, Dallen O’Neil, James Castro, and Rylan Hart all recorded an RBI in the inning. Emery would try to respond but could only muster two runs in the final two innings before Carbon shut the door with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Oakley Alton and Easton Nielson pitched for the Spartans and allowed twelve runs on eighteen hits. The spartan pitchers did not record a strikeout but did allow just one walk. Gannon Ward, Jace Mangum and Oakley Alton all recorded two RBIs.

Beau Vea started for the Dinos while Keaton Rich finished the game. Vea allowed all eight Spartan runs on ten hits. Rich threw two innings and did not allow a run or a hit. Vea and Rich combined for three strikeouts, the only strikeouts to be produced in the game.

April 21- Emery- Win- 15-3

On Tuesday the Carbon Dinos and Emery Spartans met on the baseball field in Castle Dale for a double-header. Carbon won both meetings 11-0 and 12-8. On Thursday the venue changed but the result was the same with Carbon taking the win and getting the regular season sweep 15-3.

Dallen O’Neil and Wyatt Falk split pitching duties for the Dinos with O’Neil getting the start on the mound picking up the win with 3.2 innings of work giving up three earned and striking out three. Falk came in to close out the game going 1.1 surrendering one hit and striking out one.

Carbon got on the board first in the bottom of the opening inning when both Rylan Hart and Keaton Rich would score on a wild pitch from Tuner Stoker, who started the game on the mound for Emery.

Carbon would put a trio of runs on the board in the second inning and then followed that up with five in the third. Ryker Jensen would take over for Stoker on the mound and after giving up a single and a walk, Hart was hit with a pitch walking in Ridge Nielsen. After a score on an error, Chet Anderson would send one to center allowing Hart to tag up and score. The next batter up, Colton Lowe would triple to center allowing Hart and Rich to come home, putting Carbon up 10-0.

In the top part of the fourth, Emery found some offense, starting with an Oakley Alton single to right that drove in Jace Mangum for the Spartans first score. Two batters later, Easton Nielson hit into a fielder’s choice bringing home Jensen who had reached on a single earlier in the inning.  Mason Stilson would get Alton home on another fielder’s choice making the score 10-3.

The Dinos put up two of it’s five runs in the fourth with a two out swing of the bat by Wyatt Falk when he put one over the left field fence bringing O’Neil home. Two Doubles in the inning from Keaton Rich and Anderson brought home Hart and then Rich and Jacob Vasquez’s single drove in Anderson. Mangum would then take over the pitching duties and get the final out of the inning.

Emery came out in the fifth looking to rally but it wasn’t meant to be. Jensen collected a single in the inning however, three outs and the game was over.

The Spartans struggled on the defensive side committing six errors against the Dinos and offensively they couldn’t find their groove at the plate and on the base paths.

Alton, Stilson and Nielson each collected an RBI in the loss with Jensen going 2-3 from the plate and scoring a run.

For the Dinos, Anderson and Lowe each ended the game with three RBI’s, Rich added two as did Falk.

April 26- Richfield- Double Header- 2-0

The Dinos started their season series with the Richfield Wildcats on Tuesday with a double header in Price. The Dinos have this three game series left plus a contest with Duchesne and a make-up game with Canyon View before the season will come to a close on May 5. Carbon came out swinging in both contests taking game one 12-2 and game two 11-1.

Carbon would send Beau Vea out for the start in game one. Vea would give up two runs on a home run, but after that he settled in surrendering just two more hits and struck out eight batters along the way.

The Dinos would get runs on the board in the bottom half of the first with Keaton Rich and Chet Anderson scoring on two different wild pitches. The bats for both team would go silent, until once again the Dinos put up seven runs in the fourth when Rylan Hart took the lid off by sending a double to left bringing home Dallen O’Neil. Later in the inning Wyatt Falk earned two RBI’s bringing in Colton Lowe and Jacob Vasquez. The Dinos added two more in the bottom of the fifth ending the game in five.

Vasquez went 2-3 in game one with three RBI’s and a run scored. Falk went 1-2 with a pair of RBI’s and scored a run and Hart went 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

In game two, Falk started on the mound for the Dinos going 3.1 innings giving up three hits and one earned while striking out six. Rich came in going 2.2 surrendering two hits and struck out three.

Carbon put up a single run in the first but really went to work in the fourth, putting up five runs with two coming off the bat of Ridge Nielsen, who sent a double to center field bringing in James Castro and Falk. Vea would ground out to short but not before Nielsen would score. Three more Carbon runs in the fifth made the score 9-1 headed to the sixth when Camden Wilson and Rich would each cross the plate on walks giving Carbon the 11-1 win.

Lowe went 1-3 with a triple and three RBI’s in the win for the Dino’s. Falk and Vasquez both earned two hits to go with two RBI’s and Nielsen went 1-3 with a pair of RBI’s.

April 29- Richfield- Loss- 4-2

The Dino baseball squad is inching closer and closer to the end of the regular season, with the final game coming Monday against Canyon View.  On Friday they wrapped up their season series with the Richfield Wildcats on the road. The Carbon bats were relatively quiet with the Dinos only able to collect two runs on two hits falling to the Wildcats 4-2.

The Dinos took care of their home field last Tuesday sweeping Richfield in their double-header in Price 11-1 in game one and 12-2 in the second game.

On Friday Carbon struggled at the plate, managing two hits that both came from the bat of Jacob Vasquez who went 2-3 with a pair of singles. The only runs that Carbon scored were off of walks in the fourth and seventh innings.

The Dinos could never get a rhythm on the offensive side of the plate and defensively Jacob Vasquez got the start and took the loss on the mound, putting in 4.2 innings of work, giving up three earned on four hits while striking out three. Jordan Fossat came in late, going 1.1 and giving up one earned and struck out two.

Carbon is sitting at 14-8 with a 9-2 region mark. The RPI rankings have been removed from view, but when last visible, Carbon owned the No. 3 spot, the loss against Richfield will sting a bit, but they can right the ship on Monday when they welcome Canyon View to Price for the final game of the regular season.

Canyon View holds a 15-8 record and an identical 9-2 region mark. They were ranked No.2 in the RPI, when it was last available. Going back to April 14, when these two teams met up for the first time this season, Carbon split the double-header winning the first game 7-4 but falling 8-5 in game two. The winner of Monday’s game will take the region title headed into the playoffs that will start on May 7.

May 2- Canyon View- Win- 4-3

The Dino baseball squad put the regular season to rest on Monday and claimed the Region 12 title with their win over Canyon View in Price on Senior Day. Carbon had split the double-header in Cedar City back in April. Carbon jumped out scoring all four runs in the bottom of the third and held Canyon View to just three runs taking the win 4-3.

The game on Monday was in essence a region title game with both teams entering the contest with identical 9-2 records in conference play. The Canyon View Falcons were also one spot ahead of the Dinos in the state RPI rankings at No. 2.

Both teams started out quietly going scoreless through the first two and a half innings.

In the bottom of the third with two on Rylan Hart came to the plate and hit a line drive to second base reaching on an error and driving in James Castro. Next batter up Keaton Rich sent a double to left field bringing home Beau Vea and Hart. Chet Anderson came up to the plate and the second pitch would get away from the Canyon View catcher allowing Rich to score from second putting the Dinos up 4-0.

The Falcons made things interesting in the top of the fifth, as Carbon gave up two runs on a walk and an error. Canyon View was quiet in the top of the sixth and really had something going the top of the seventh after a single and then a double that brought in one run the made the score 4-3, but after that Vea who came in and went 2.2 innings settled in and  struck-out the final two batters slamming the door shut on the Falcons.

Rich got the start on the bump giving up just one earned on three hits while striking out five. Camden Wilson took over in the fifth and allowed one run and stuck-out one.

Rich came up big on the offensive side going 1-3 with two RBI’s and scoring one. James Castro was 2-3 at the plate and scored a run and Vea was 1-2 and put up a run of his own.

Carbon now waits until Thursday when the final RPI will be released along with the bracket for the 3A State Baseball Championships. If Carbon ends in the top four spots they will host a first round pod that will begin on May 7.

Round Two

May 12- Juab- Win- 6-4

On Mar. 23 of this season, the Carbon Dinos and the Juab Wasps faced each other in a non-region game, a game in which the Carbon Dinos dominated 16-6. This morning played host to the rematch that did not disappoint.

The Carbon Dinos entered the quarterfinal matchup after an exciting walk-off win over the Grantsville Cowboys last week. Juab entered the game on a 16-game win streak, their last loss coming in that Mar. 23 game.

Jordan Fossat started the game on the mound for the Dinos and held the Wasps at bay through four scoreless innings. Through four, Fossat had allowed just one hit. With the help of the defense, Carbon threw out four Wasp base runners in the early innings to stop Juab from building momentum.

Offensively for the Dinos, Carbon tried to get things going early, but left six runners in scoring position to keep things knotted at 0-0 through four.
In the bottom of the fifth, Juab opened things up with a solo home run and an RBI double to take a late 2-0 lead. Wyatt Falk replaced Fossat in the fifth to record the final out of the inning.

Carbon immediately answered in the top of the sixth with six straight singles and six runs to take a commanding 6-2 lead.
Wyatt Falk would slow down the Wasps for the sixth. He did, however, allow two more runs to score to cut Carbon’s lead to two, 6-4. Falk would shut down the Wasps in the seventh to seal the upset and advance the Dinos to the semi-final round.
