The Carbon School District weekly update shines light on the Preschool Program that the district offers. This program is open to children ages 3 and 4 years old that live within the Carbon School District. Preschool Coordinator, Beverly Martinez took some time from her busy schedule to share all the details of the Preschool Program.

The students out at Bruin Point Elementary have a new teacher and are trying their hands at growing vegetables. “We do have a new teacher out in East Carbon, her name is Jennifer Carter, we’re excited to have her on board with us this year. I went out and they were growing radishes in their water tables. So that’s kind of a fun hands-on things for kids to get some background knowledge about how things grow. Kind of a good science experiment and then the kids got to taste them, some of the kids liked them and never had them before, and some of the kids wouldn’t even taste them,” stated Martinez. This experience taught the students not only about science, but about responsibility, communication, ownership and teamwork.

All of the preschools in the district are at full capacity this year, except there is openings in the special education school. If parents have some concerns about their child’s development there is help available.  “If you log on to the district website which is https://www.carbonschools.org/ and go on the preschool page, there’s tool there called the Ages and Stages and that’s a screening tool. So if you’re curious about how your child is doing compared to other kids their age, that’s a great tool for you to fill out. It will just give you an idea of how their doing. Especially important if you have concerns about your child’s development,” said Martinez. This is a great tool that sends the information to Martinez who then can arrange further testing for your child.

Many parents pay be interested to know what the pre-school curriculum consists of so Martinez explains, “That state has given us what we call the Core Standards and they are also available on our Carbon School District website on the preschool page. Any parent can go on and look at the Core Standards and see what the expectations are for children to learn in preschool. One thing that we’re really excited about this year is we’ve adopted letters training and Heggerty Curriculum.” This new additional of curriculum will help students as they move on to kindergarten.
