The Lady Spartans jumped into the playoffs on Saturday when they welcomed the Grand County Red Devils to Castle Dale. The 3A State Championships got underway over the weekend at home sites across the state, and the Emery Spartans moved on defeating the Red Devils 3-2.

Emery ended the season at No. 15 in the RPI, which meant they would host an opening round playoff game. Grand was a team that Emery knew well since they share the same region. In the two regular season meetings Emery came out on top 4-0 and 4-1.

In the game on Saturday, neither took control in the opening period, with Grand and Emery playing to a 1-1 tie by halftime.  In half number two, the Spartans and Red Devils exchanged goals knotting things back up at 2-2, and then Emery’s Kaylee Mayne scored her second goal of the game, sealing the win for the Spartans.

Purity Mason added one goal and Megan Stilson had an assist in the Emery victory, helping them advance to the next round. Calypso Mason earned the win in goal.

Moving in to the next round the Spartans will now face the Canyon View Falcons.

The Falcons hold the No.2 spot in the RPI with a 13-3 overall record, which includes a perfect 8-0 mark in league play. The three losses that they suffered this season were all out of classification against Stansbury, Cedar and Salem Hills and the Falcons are also riding a 10 game winning streak not having lost since August 18.

The Falcons and Spartans are very familiar with each other as well and have already faced off twice this season in region play, with Canyon View taking both meetings 5-0 and 6-0.

Wednesday’s game will take place in Cedar City at 4 p.m..

If the Spartans win they will face the winner of the Richfield/Juan Diego match on Friday, October 15.
