This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Castle Heights Elementary and Instructional Coach, Renee Pressett took time to speak over the telephone with Castle Country Radio to discuss a grant, turkey trot, and magic of Christmas gifts.

A teacher from the school received a STEM grant to purchase a few Ozobots. “Mrs. Thompson in fifth grade applied for this grant, and she was awarded it. She’s going to buy twelve Ozobots and I think the best analogy is they look like tiny R2D2s. So there are just these little small, couple-inch tall robots and the kids can program them. So they get to experience programming and they can add to them, they can put arms on them or add a pen to it so it draws and do all sorts of fun things with it,” said Mrs. Pressett. This will be a great STEM experience for students to learn and discover in the classroom.

Principal Fluckey is hosting a Turkey Trot for students to burn off some calories before heading off to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. “They get to go out and run, and burn some energy off before Thanksgiving before they eat all the calories and she had healthy snacks for them. So it’s just something, a little fun thing they look forward to and enjoy moving their bodies,” explained Mrs. Pressett. The annual event is put on each year and includes the entire student body. On this day students are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes to run in.

The school’s PTA organization hosts a Magic of Christmas Gifts event each year for the students. “They’ve created this program, where they’re going to have the kids think of someone in their life who really does a lot for them, that they need to thank, someone in their family. Then they have a catalog, and the kids get to go through the catalog and look for a gift that they think would be good for this person. They get to order that gift and then the PTA will help them make a card, and then they’ll get to make a bag, and wrap it up and take it home. So these kiddos will have something that they’ve done independently for their family that they can give to someone they love,” stated Mrs. Pressett. This will give students a chance to do something meaningful while expressing gratitude toward their loved one.
