
Green River has been fighting its way through the season collecting wins along the way. Last Friday, Caprock traveled to take on the Pirates, who took care of business earning a 58-47 win. Tuesday night Green River traveled to Escalante, in a non-region tilt, coming up just short 42-41.
Green River sits at 8-10 overall including a 1-3 region mark. They also hold the No.17 spot in the 1A RPI. The RPI is a formula that the Utah High School Activities Association uses to rank teams in each classification. It will be updated until the end of the season when the final rankings will be used as seeding for the State Championships.
Against Caprock, the Pirates played pretty close in the first half and held a slight edge at halftime, 21-20.
It was in the third that Green River made their move, putting up 20 in the quarter, and keeping Caprock to just 10. The final eight minutes were played to a stalemate with each team scoring 17, but with the lead that they built throughout, the Pirates claimed the 58-47 win.
Luis Hernandez scored 15 for Green River, Raul Mendoza had 14 and Bridger Meadows added 12.
On Tuesday night, the Pirates were back on the road to take on Escalante.
Escalante has a 2-8 overall record and sit at No.19 in the RPI.
The home team jumped out to a quick 13-8 lead to end the first quarter. In the second the Moquis put up 14 and Green River found themselves down 27-12 going into the half.
In the second half, Green River started to chip away at the Escalante lead finding their offense and putting the clamps on defensively. The Pirates actually outscored the Moquis 29-15 in the half but Escalante had created a big enough lead to hold off Green River, earning the 42-41 victory.
Bridger Meadows put up 12 in the contest, Joe Vollmer added 10 and Mendoza had seven in the loss.
Next Thursday, February 2, the Pirates will be on the road in Monticello (6-8, 3-0, and No. 14), they will be back home the following Saturday when they welcome Monument Valley.
