
The Pirates basketball team went 1-1 in a pair of games held last Thursday and Saturday. The first contest against Monticello, was a tough one going back-and-forth but, the Pirates fell 53-48. In game two back home, Green River claimed a big win over Monument Valley 79-69.
The Green River team (9-11, 2-4 and No. 15), have just four games left on the regular season schedule, three games at home and only one on the road sets up pretty well for the Pirates.
In the first half against Monticello, the Pirates put up 28 points and used their defense to hold Monticello to 21 taking a seven point lead into half time.
In the second half, the third quarter was a battle with the Buckaroo putting up 17 and the Pirates coming up with 13. It was the fourth, that took it’s toll on Green River, scoring just 7 points and allowing 15 in the quarter as Monticello would take the 53-48 win.
Jarrett Guerrera scored nine in the loss. Joe Vollmer, Ryker Meadows and Raul Mendoza each scored eight.
On Saturday the Pirates were back home to face Monument Valley (4-14, 0-6 in region, and No. 16). The Pirates came out in the first half ready to run away with this one scoring 23 in the first and another 12 in the second, taking a 35-29 lead at the half.
Half number two, was another battle, with both teams putting up 21 each in the third, the fourth was where the Pirates showed some grit, digging down and scoring 23 while holding Monument Valley to 19, which allowed Green River to take the 79-69 win.
Luis Hernandez kept finding the basket scoring 30 for Green River. Hoyt Hunt scored 16 and Bridjer Meadows had 11 in the win.
Tuesday night, Green River will be on the road in Moab to face Moab to take on Grand (5-15, 0-6 in region and No. 17 in 3A).
Saturday they will be back home to face Whitehorse (8-9, 2-2 in region and No. 10). Game time is set for 3.
