
Coming off a 6-4 loss in Hurricane on Thursday, the Lady Dinos traveled just down the road to St. George for the Elite Tournament. Playing three games on Friday, Carbon would finish the day 1-2, with the lone win coming over the Cedar City Reds.
In their opening contest they would face the Cyprus Pirates. The Pirates finished 21-11 overall last season going 10-2 in Region 2 in the 6A classification.
The contest started pretty even with both teams keeping each other in check. Adri Abeyta would get the Dinos on the board in the bottom of the second with a double to left field scoring Sam Riddle and Kylan Sorenson, tying up the score at 2-2. In the next at bat, a Danica Adams ground out scored Jenna Richards and allowed the Dinos to take the lead.
Heading into the top of the sixth tied at seven, Cyprus exploded for 10 runs, Sorenson would make the move from third to take over the pitching duties and was welcomed by the Pirates going deep twice on a pair of home runs that would add half of the runs in the inning.
The Dinos came up in the bottom of the sixth knowing that they would need a rally to come back in this one. Things would get going when Makayla Scovill would reach on an error scoring Adams. In the next at bat Gabby Vasquez singled to left bringing home Brielle Sandoval and Reese Ardohain. Carbon would put a couple more runs but the rally would fall short, 17-13.
Abeyta would go 3-4 with four RBI’s for the Lady Dinos. Sandoval was 2-3 with a pair of runs, Vasquez was 2-4 with a pair of RBI’s and Sorenson, 1-3 with three runs.
Scovill was given the loss on the bump gong five innings with 12 hits and eight earned runs, Sorenson came in to go the rest of the way surrendering five hits and six earned.
In the second game of the day, Carbon faced the Pleasant Grove Vikings, last season the Vikings ended the season 19-14 going 4-4 in Region 4 in the 6A class.
The Dinos couldn’t find their offense in the game being shutout across six innings of play, falling 6-0 in the contest.
Scovill and Vasquez both went 1-2.
Haven Byerly was handed the loss, going six innings, giving up five earned with 11 strikeouts.
In the final game Carbon would face the Cedar City Reds, returning the favor from the previous game shutting them out, 4-0.
The Reds ended last season 13-17 overall landing in sixth place in 4A Region 10.
The Lady Dinos went into the game with their ace Byerly on the mound who turned in a complete game no-hit shutout striking out 13 along the way.
Jenna Richards went 2-2 with a pair of runs. Byerly went 1-3 with two RBI’s and Sandoval had a pair of RBI’s as well.
The Dinos will be back on the field on Friday, when they travel to Grantsville. Grantsville lost in the quarterfinals last season to eventual champions the Manti Templars at the 3A State Championships.
