The Carbon School District weekly update shines a light on the Preschool Program that the district offers. Preschool Coordinator, Beverly Martinez took some time from her busy schedule to share all the details of the Preschool Program.

Right now, the Preschool Program for the 2023-2024 school year is full. However, Bruin Point Elementary does have some openings for the 2023-2024 school year. “Bruin Point still has lots of room, so if you’re out there in East Carbon, go a head and give me a call out there. Then like you said, if you want to call and get on the list for 2024-2025 school year, I do already have about a half-page of people that are registering or want their kid on the wait list for that school year,” stated Martinez. This program is open to children ages 3 and 4 years old that live within the Carbon School District. The Preschool Program is not funding by the state legislator so there is tuition cost. The tuition for a 3-year-old is $50.00 per month and the 4-year-old program is $75.00 per month.

If you would like to get a jump start in preparing your child for preschool you could take time to start reading with and to your child. “I do have parents all the time tell me, well my child won’t let me read to them; they just pick up the book and throw it, and they don’t want to engage with a book. I would suggest in that case maybe go a little younger or a little easier type of book for them to look at,” said Martinez. The most important thing is to have your child engage when sitting down and looking at a book. Start with an easier book to introduce them to books your child will indicate when they are ready for a harder book.

As you prepare your child for preschool, it’s a good idea to get rhyming word books, they are a great way to start reading with your preschooler.  “Moving on to preschool one of the best types of books for preschool is a book that rhymes. As you’re reading that, you can leave off the rhyming word and see if they can fill it in. So you’re reading along, leave off that last rhyming word and when they are getting some really good literacy skills they’ll be able to come up with that rhyming word and fill it in. Then you are kind of shared reading, you’re enjoying that book together and both of you have a part in reading that book together,” said Martinez.
