The Carbon School District weekly update brings attention to Mont Harmon Middle School’s Archery Team. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with the advisor, Tom Lasslo to talk about the team.

The team recently returned from the state competition in Ogden where they performed very well. “We took first at the state tournament. We’re preparing for nationals, its’ the 28th of April. It’s been a really successful season, the kids have a ton of drive, they been working extremely hard. So we’re super excited to see how we can do at the Western Nationals,” said Mr. Lasslo. The archery program has really taken off at area schools and has proven to be a great extracurricular activity for students.

In April the students will be able to perform at the National Tournament because it will be held in Salt Lake area.  “Nationals are in Salt Lake, I think we have it for five years straight and so I think we might be on our fourth year right now, I’m not positive about that. So we’ll have it here in Salt Lake for a few more years,” said Mr. Lasslo.  Mont Harmon Middle School was able to have two qualifying teams make it to the National Tournament.

Mr. Lasslo has been coaching/advising archers for the last eight years. The program started from a grant that the school received.  “There was a state grant going on and I thought I could get the state grant, there were several other people in Price or schools that thought they could get the state grant so we put in for it and we end up getting the grant. It was a 90/10 grant and so they pay 90 percent of it and we pay 10. So I think the original grant was about $4,000.00, I think we only had to pay about $400.00 to get in to it. So that is how it all started,” stated Mr. Lasslo. The program has really taken off since its conception and each year brings several students out to try out for the archery team.

The program would not be a success without the many sponsors who help out the team financially. “We would like to thank the Friends of the NRA, the local chapter here. They’ve donated us a lot of money for targets and arrows, and just other things in the classroom. They really put out a ton for us and so I know they have a banquet coming up in August, so if you can support them that would be awesome. We also have the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, they’ve donated us a ton of money through the years and in the past – the arrows and the targets get really expensive. Just our faculty/staff at Mont Harmon, our custodians there are always incredibly supportive, the teachers there are supportive of all the kids, our principal is awesome over there and so we would really like to thank them,” stated Mr. Lasslo.
