March 14- Canyon View- Win- 2-0

After a couple of games that were canceled because of weather, the Carbon boy’s soccer team finally got on the field when they welcomed fellow Region 12 member the Canyon View Falcons.  Carbon had balanced scoring as they scored one goal in the first half and another in the second to take the 2-0 win, starting the season off 1-0 overall and in region play.

Last season Carbon went 9-6 overall which included a 7-1 Region 12 mark landing them a region championship, and a first-round bye. In the second round of the 3A State Championships, they fell to Juan Diego 6-0.

In the early moments of the contest, both teams had their defense on display until the 17th minute when Connor Cunningham found the back of the net to put the Dinos up 1-0, Carbon would carry the lead into the locker room at halftime.

The opening of the second half was a copy of the first, as the defense of both teams slowed each other down and kept each other off of the board. In the 64th minute, Tyler Morris would sneak one past the Canyon View goalie to put the Dinos up 2-0. A late shot on goal by the Falcons was saved by Carbon goalkeeper, Dylan Curtis as he secured the win and a shutout.

Morris earned a goal and an assist in the contest. Cunningham had one goal and Boyd Bradford had an assist as well, with Curtis registering the shutout.

The Wildcats found the back of the net first, but before the end of the half, Tyler Morris found the equalizer for the Dinos when he knocked in a rebound off of a penalty kick.

Carbon came out a new team in the second half, putting it between the pipes three more times to take the 4-1 win.

March 21- Emery- Loss- 1-1 (8-7 in three overtimes)

Emery High School goalkeeper Koalton Curtis came up with a game-saving stop on the seventh penalty kick to secure a thrilling 7-6 win for the Emery Spartans over the Carbon Dinos Tuesday afternoon in Castle Dale.

Meeting for the first time this season, the Spartans and Dinos delivered a regular-season classic that could not be decided in the first 100 minutes of play. Still locked in a tie after the first five slotted kicks, the Spartans managed to get the stop on kick seven to earn the hard-fought win.

Tied 0-0 at the break, the Dinos found the back of the net first as Thijs Bertens scored early in the second half. Emery’s Carson Childs tied the game late in regulation off a corner kick.

The game remained locked at 1-1 following two 10-minute overtime periods, setting the stage for the dramatic ending on penalty kicks.

Tuesday’s setback is the first of the league slate for the Dinos, who opened Region 12 play with wins over Canyon View and Richfield. The Dinos have been elite defensively in three league games, allowing just two goals throughout regulation.

The win for Emery is the first this season after starting the new campaign 0-3 with all three losses coming out of region. The first league game for the Spartans was scheduled for last Thursday against Canyon View, but the game was postponed due to the weather.

Carbon will take the rest of the week off before returning to the field Tuesday, March 28 against the Canyon View Falcons. The Spartans will next travel to Moab to meet the Grand Red Devils Thursday at 4:00 p.m.

This would be the second and final meeting between the two schools in the regular season, with Carbon taking the first meeting in Price just a couple of weeks ago. The Dinos would find the back of the net twice and Dylan Curtis would earn another shutout win, 2-0.

Coming off of back-to-back losses in Manti and Castle Dale against Emery, Carbon was in need of a win to get back on track at Canyon View on Tuesday.

Carbon would get on the board in the first half, finding the back of the net and holding the Falcons scoreless, taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Dinos went to work once again putting up another goal, and in between the pipes Dylan Curtis would register another shutout win, his second of the season, for the 2-0.

Luke Brady and Connor Cunningham each would score one goal, and Tacoma Smith and Joe Morley each had an assist in the game.

Carbon has made it to Spring Break with a 4-2 overall record and is still on pace to repeat as Region 12 Champions with a 4-1 record. The Emery Spartans sit atop the region right now at 4-0 and are the only team in the division to beat the Dinos.

The Dinos came out in the first half trying to feel out the Red Devils managing to put one goal in the back of the net and carrying a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

In half number two, Grand would put one through the pipes however, Carbon came back to ring the bell not once but twice in the half putting the Dinos up and giving them the 3-1 win.

Connor Cunningham scored a goal for Carbon, as did Luke Brady. Tacoma Smith and Parker Morgan each had an assist in the Dino victory as well.

Carbon heads into the long week off before they head into the final stretch, and won’t be back on the field until Tuesday, April 11 when they travel to Richfield.

They will be back home on Thursday, April 13 when the Emery Spartans come to town for a possible region championship. Game time is set for 4 p.m..

April 11- Richfield- Win- 3-1

The Carbon Dinos remain in contention for a division championship after topping the Richfield Wildcats 3-1 Tuesday afternoon on the road.

Trailing the Emery Spartans by one game in the loss column, the Dinos were faced with a near must-win situation. Trailing 1-0 at the end of the first half, Carbon roared back by scoring three goals in the second half to grab the monumental win.

Sam Dart, Tyler Morris, and Boyd Bradford all scored one goal to lift the Dinos. The win marks the second over Richfield in as many games, giving the Dinos a season series sweep.

Tuesday’s win pushes Carbon to 5-1 in region-12 play, trailing Emery who is a perfect 5-0. The two teams are set to meet Thursday at Carbon for the second and final time this regular season.

The first meeting with Emery ended in thrilling fashion as the two teams were forced to go to penalty kicks after ending regulation and the first two overtimes tied 1-1. The Spartans then grabbed the victory after six penalty kicks.

Carbon will enter Thursday’s highly important tilt with a 5-2 record overall and ranked No. 4 in the RPI. Emery is right behind at 5-3 and ranked No. 6.

April 13- Emery- Win- 2-0

The last time Carbon and Emery met on the soccer field, it all came down to penalty kicks with the Spartans walking away the winner handing the Dinos their first region loss. On Thursday in Price, the two hooked up once again with Carbon returning the favor handing the Spartans their first loss in Region 12 play, 2-0.

With the win, Carbon ties Emery in the loss column, as they each have one. The Dinos are 6-2 with a 6-1 region mark and have two games remaining, but only one is a region game. Tuesday they will travel to Moab to face Grand. The Spartans have three games to go, including two division contests against Richfield on Friday, they will also have to travel to Cedar City to face Canyon View in a game that was scheduled for March but had to be rescheduled due to weather, that game will be played on Tuesday, April 25.

The game last Thursday wasn’t as dramatic as the first meeting, with the Dinos scoring a goal in the first and another in the second. Offensively, the Spartans had no answer and were held off the scoreboard by Dylan Curtis, who notched his third shutout this season for the Dinos.

Sam Dart and Luke Brady, both found the back of the net for the Dinos, Brady and Parker Morgan each earned an assist in the win.

Emery will face North Sanpete in a non-region tilt on Tuesday on the road. They will then welcome Richfield to Castle Dale on Friday for the first of the final two games of the season, in March, the Spartans handed Richfield a 2-0 loss on the road.

Carbon travels to Moab to face Grand on Tuesday in their final region contest on Tuesday. In the first meeting with the Red Devils, the Dinos took a 3-1 victory.

If both teams win their remaining region contest they will be co-champions for Region 12.

April 18- Grand- Loss- 4-2

With a win against the Grand Red Devils, the Dinos could put pressure on the Emery Spartans in the race for the top spot in Region 12, unfortunately, it was not meant to be as they dropped their final region match of the season 4-2.

Carbon sits at 6-3 overall and now 6-2 in region play, with their only region losses coming from Emery and now Grand.

Carbon couldn’t find any offense in the first half and was unable to keep Grand out of the net, with the Red Devils taking a 2-0 lead into the locker room. The Dinos came out in the second half going back to work and finding the goal twice. Grand was also able to score in the second half pushing the score to 4-2 handing the Dinos their third loss of the season.

Tyler Morris would score for Carbon and added an assist. Thijs Bertens added the other goal. Luke Brady had an assist in the Dinos loss.

Carbon can still win the region crown outright but the Spartans would have to drop their final two games of the season, if Emery were to lose just one of their final two, both teams would have a share of the region title.

Carbon heads back to the field on Friday when they travel to Beaver.

April 21- Beaver- Win- 2-1

The Dinos are sitting in the driver’s seat for a region title. On Friday they traveled to Beaver for a non-conference contest with the Beavers. The Dinos would turn a 1-1 tie in the first half to a 2-1 win at the end of regulation.

The Dinos now hold a 7-3 overall record, 6-2 in the region, and have completed the region portion of their schedule.  Carbon now awaits the outcome of the Emery and Canyon View match on Tuesday, an Emery win and the Dinos will share the Region 12 title with the Spartans, if Emery loses the Dinos will hold the title alone.

In the game with Beaver, both teams came out and put their offense on display going 1-1 in the first half. In half number two, The Dinos came out looking to end it, finding the back of the net and putting the score at 2-1, taking their seventh win of the season.

Connor Cunningham found the back of the net once for the Dinos in the win. Luke Bradford scored the other goal for Carbon logging one assist, and Mason Engar added another assist.

Tuesday, Carbon will be on the road to take on Waterford, they will then await the final RPI and rankings for the 3A State Championships that will be released on Wednesday.

The opening round of the playoffs will start Friday at home sites.

April 25- Waterford- Win-1-0

The Dino soccer club traveled to Waterford on Tuesday for the final game of the regular season knowing if they took care of business they would enter post-season play with their best foot forward. The Dinos did just that, handing Waterford a 1-0 loss.

Carbon may have been scoreboard-watching to see the outcome of the Emery/Canyon View game, if Emery lost they would hand Carbon the Region 12 crown outright, a win, and the Dinos would share the title with the Spartans.

Coming out in the first half the Dinos scored the only goal of the match off the foot of Tyler Morris, and the single goal was all that the Dinos needed as they were able to shut out Waterford for the 1-0 win.

Morris had the lone goal off of the assist from Tacoma Smith. Dylan Curtis registered his fourth shutout of the season in the pipes.

Carbon finished the regular season with an 8-3 overall record holding a 6-2 region mark.

May 6- Morgan- Loss- 6-0The Carbon Dinos were on the road for the next match in 3A State Soccer Championships. After earning a 2-0 win over No.12 Canyon View, the No. 5 Dinos were on the road to face the No. 4 Morgan Trojans. The Dinos finished the regular season at 8-3, with a 6-2 Region 12 mark, tying them for first with the Emery Spartans.

Earning the meeting with Morgan after the Canyon View win, the Dinos came out flat, not able to find the back of the net in the first half, and couldn’t shut down Morgan as they went into the locker room at the half down 3-0.

In the second half, Dylan Curtis scored the only goal for the Dinos, but the damage was done, and Morgan would take the 5-1 win.

The Dinos season ends with a 9-4 overall mark.
