With weather conditions warming up there is plenty of projects taking place in Helper City. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Public Works Director, Michael Mastin to get all the details about what is going on in Helper City this summer.

The city was awarded $3.4 million grant from the Division of Drinking Water to assist with some projects that the Public Works Department is involved in. “So Helper City has looked at doing a couple of different projects with that $3.4, and $3.4 doesn’t go quite as far as you would think it would but we’re looking at doing a Scada System. Basically, what that does is that kind helps free up Public Works, gets us to keep an eye on the tanks remotely, and just figure out our flows and kind of have our eyes where we aren’t physically,” stated Mastin. The city is also looking to spend some of the funds on tank maintenance and transmission line replacement to better assist the city when it comes to their water needs.

Helper City is putting together some Construction Standards that will be addressed at an upcoming City Council Meeting. “So we are going to be presenting those Construction Standards to the council. Basically, what it is, we lined out what we would like to see from new development that’s happening in Helper. If someone wants to build a home or do a subdivision of some kind, they will have all these Construction Standards, so keep an eye out for that,” said Mastin. This will make it so any new development will know what is expected from them as far as the city guidelines are concerned.

There will be some road projects taking place over the summer months that citizens need to be aware of in city limits. “So look for the end of June we’ll be having a bunch of asphalt work done on different potholes that have happened over the winter time trying to get those taken care of as well. There’s a, Janet Street underpass, looking at that, trying to get that to where it’s not as bumpy as you’re going underneath,” said Mastin. The city just wants to remind residents to proceed with caution when workers are working on these road projects this summer.

This is not a city project but some residents may have noticed that the DNR has been doing some work up at Gigliotti’s Pond. “So we have a special needs fishing day on the 22nd of this month and the DNR has been so gracious to come up and clear all the cat tails that’s here along the bank of it and they’re cutting them down and getting them all nice and really putting some effort into that pond that everybody loves,” explained Mastin.  The city really appreciates the work the DNR is putting in at the pond to get it ready for the big fishing day event.
