The USU Extension Office in Carbon County is excited to be able to invite students from the Carbon and Emery County area to participate in the Utah State University Mustang Camp taking place in Richfield on July 27 and July 28. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Extension Assistant Professor, Steve Price to get all the details.

The goal of this camp is to help youth understand and appreciate the value of our wild horses and burros. “We do have a few populations that are fairly local and we’re really trying to get kids to experience that, so that they can learn firsthand what’s actually going on there with the populations and what is happening on range land,” said Price. Research shows that providing educational opportunities outside of the classroom is a great way to cultivate personal interest and conservation stewardship in youth.

This overnight camp is an opportunity for youth to learn about managing public lands, rangelands, wild horses, and burros, looking deeper at the relationship between healthy lands and healthy horses. “What we’re really trying to do is show kids the science, show kids the history. We even have some guest speakers, to kind of talk about both sides of the coin, if you will. We do demonstrations out of the rangeland showing them how actual Range Biologists determine forage capacity and different things like that. So we’re really there to put the science in front of the kids,” stated Price. Students will also be able to go to a holding facility, learn about the adoption process and how BLM manages population round-ups.

This camp is open to students ages 6th grade to 12th grade. The cost to participate is $60.00 and includes the following:

4 meals
Overnight lodging
Camp materials
Camp activities
