The Carbon Caring for Kids organization is ready to start another successful school year in providing weekend meals kits for children. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Coordinator, Marcie Loveless to get all the details for this new school year.
“We’re going to be doing the same kinds of things, and it still surprises me there still some people that have never heard of Carbon Caring for Kids. But its just basically a weekend food kit for kids who are needing it on the weekends. We do not know the names, everything is anonymous, the counselors at each of the schools access the needs of their students, and they give me a number, and then I just have tons and tons of people in the community come help pack these kits and deliver them, and donate money. It’s a community effort, it’s not funded by grants, its funded by our community,” explained Loveless.
Community members can donate food items or make monetary donations towards the cause. “So we do the same food every single week, all these foods are kid friendly, something that they can open up and eat. We’ve got cereal, we’ve got snacks, like the soccer snacks, all of the little individual sized snacks, there’s fruit cups, apple sauce squeezes, tuna fish and cracker boxes. All of it is something a kid can open up and just eat. So all of this information is on the website that you can donate food. But even more important, since we have grown, when we get monetary donations, when we get that money, we’re able to buy things in bulk. Which really stretches that dollar a little bit further, especially as prices have gone up,” stated Loveless. The organization has found that by buying the food items in bulk help prepare the food kits in a timely manner. Monetary donations can be made at Mountain America Credit Union.
Normally, Carbon Caring for Kids will allow various groups to come help pack the food kits but they are booked till January, except for two weeks, Halloween and Christmas break. They are always needing assistance to deliver the food kits to the schools on Thursdays or Fridays. If this sounds like something your group or family would like to do, please get in contact with Loveless on the Carbon Caring for Kids Facebook page.
