The initial RPI for 3A football was released on Monday and the Carbon Dinos are in the No.11 spot. The RPI is a formula that the Utah High School Activities Association uses to rank teams in every classification, the number is updated at the end of every game and then at the end of the season will be used to rank teams for play in the State Championships.
Richfield claimed the No.1 overall spot followed by Canyon View. Manti, Ogden and Morgan round out the remainder of the top five.
The top three teams are all members of the same region as the Dinos, Region 12. The Dinos will play No. 3 Manti on September 15th at home, the following week they travel to Richfield to face the Wildcats and they end the season on October 13 with No. 2 Canyon View at home.
The formula used to create each team’s RPI number is as follows:
MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponents (Note: this is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, but rather by averaging the winning percentage of the opponents).
OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage: Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
