The initial RPI for 2A football was released on Monday and the Emery Spartans are in the No.5 spot. The RPI is a formula that the Utah High School Activities Association uses to rank teams in every classification, the number is updated at the end of every game and then at the end of the season will be used to rank teams for play in the State Championships.
San Juan sits atop the ranks in the No. 1 spot, Judge Memorial follows at No. 2. Providence Hall, Layton Christian Academy and Emery round out the top five.
Emery has a date with the No.1 team San Juan on the road coming up on September 15. They will face No. 6 Delta in the final game of the season October 13 at home. They will be home for No. 10 South Sevier September 29 and will take on Grand, No. 11 on October 6, in Moab.
The formula used to create each team’s RPI number is as follows:
MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponents (Note: this is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, but rather by averaging the winning percentage of the opponents).
OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage: Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
