The C.A.R.E. Coalition, along with Four Corners Community Behavioral Health are excited to host another Community Connection event on Monday, Nov. 20 at 6:30 pm at Sally Mauro Elementary. Everyone in the community is invited to attend this family gathering. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Suicide Prevention Specialist, Amanda McIntosh to get all the details.
“So the C.A.R.E. Coalition does a really good job every month in having a Community Connections which is an opportunity for families to come together one evening, it’s the third Monday of every month. Participate in a little activity, and have a protective factor subject matter covered, and then there’s usually fun games, things of that nature,” explained McIntosh. This entire event is free to the public.
Not only will there be an activity to enjoy for families but this is a great opportunity to open up the lines of communication between parents and youth. “Because research has shown that the more time, quality time, that we sit together as a family and have the real conversations of things that are going on in our lives, the more likely it is that as our kids get into young adulthood and into adulthood, you’ve developed that bond, and that relationship, and that trust with the parents and with the kids, that they can come to you when the really heavy subject matters hit,” said McIntosh. Those heavy subject matters could include alcohol and drug use, and mental health.
Families will be given a chance to build a pie while listening to a free resilience workshop. “Amanda Paiz is going to be giving an object lesson on resiliency. One of the greatest foundational character, characteristics we can build in our youth is that resiliency. Our schools touch on it really well with bullying and things of that nature. But with resiliency its knowing how to react to situations and proceed in solving problems,” stated McIntosh. The families will enjoy building a pie together learning resilience through the “grit pie method.”
