The Green River Pirates basketball team started their campaign at home on Thursday when they welcomed in the Wayne Badgers. The boy’s team will be the only team playing this season for the Pirates, and the first game was a rough one as they fell to the Badgers 62-38.

Sadly, Green River was unable to field a girl’s team this season, hopefully they can regroup and come back for the 2024-2025 year.

The boy’s ended last year with a loss in the second round to Manila, ending the season 11-16. Wayne fell to Rich in the second round as well and closed out the year 15-10.

The contest on Thursday started out with both teams sizing each other up playing to  a 9-7 advantage for the Badgers. In the second quarter both teams came out firing with the Badgers adding 18 to their total and the Pirates scoring 12 as Wayne took a 27-19 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The second half was all about Wayne building on the lead they had as the Badgers would outscore the Pirates 35-19 in the pushing the tempo and closing out Green River with a 62-38 win,.

For the Pirates, Luis Hernandez scored 11, Rolando Anguiano added nine and Raul Mendoza eight in the loss.

Green river will not head back to the court until December 5, when they travel to Altamont.
