Gust Katsavrias entered into the presence of God at Parkdale Rehab and Care Center on February 27, 2024, just a few months after the love of his life passed. He was 79 years young. He had battled skin cancer for many years.
Gust was born on June 16, 1944, in Price, Utah to Nick and Mary Kournianakis Katsavrias. He lived in the coal town of Hiawatha (Greektown), Utah, and moved to Price, Utah in 1952. He continued to reside in his childhood home for the remaining 72 years of his life.
He married the love of his life, Sharon Stoddard Nyhart Anast, at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church on May 20, 2006. The couple was together for over 30 years, through many, many Greek Festivals and were married for 19 years. Father George Politis performed the ceremony and commented at the end, “and it’s about time!!!”
The couple was blessed to share Sharon’s four children and their spouses. Family was the most important thing to Gust and each member knew his love and appreciation for them.
Gust grew up attending schools in Price and graduated from Carbon High School in 1963. He was on the wrestling and football teams. He went on to attend College of Eastern Utah in Price, graduating with an associate degree in electronics for machinists. Three days after graduation he had a job at White Sands Green River Missile Base as a radar technician tracking missiles from Green River, Utah to the White Sands Missile Base in New Mexico.
Eight years later Gust’s special friend, Tom Patterick, asked him to become partners with him in Kilfoyle Krafts in Price. He managed the treatment plant that would send treated lumber throughout the United States, including Hawaii. Gust retired 35 years later in 2008.
Early in his life Gust always worked; he had jobs at Price Trading Company, Price City Swimming Pool, and Sander’s Texaco where he loved being able to work and clean his own vehicles. Through the years Gust never missed a day of work.
Gust loved to serve and did so in many capacities including Carbon Masons, Order of Elks, Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, AHEPA, Greek Festivals, and as a neighbor and friend.
Gust loved attending family functions regardless of the time and distance. As a young boy with his father, and throughout his married life with Sharon, he would celebrate and host Greek Orthodox Easter, complete with roasted lamb over the firepit. For over 65 years he created a lifetime of family memories.
He was a car enthusiast and enjoyed working on cars and going to NASCAR races. He loved his 1988 Corvette and won many trophies at car shows, it never saw blacktop if there was a cloud in the sky.
He enjoyed building and flying remote controlled model airplanes, making model railroads and mountain bike riding. He created lifelong friendships along the way and was loyal and devoted to those he called his friend.
Gust is survived by his three children, Lance (Kelly) Anast and their children, Nick (Desaree) Anast, and great-grandchildren, Brynlee, Lyndon, Kamden, Kaysen, and Tsaile; Krisalyn Anast, and her children, Ellie and Saige; Laurie Tryon, and her children, Ashley Tryon and Alex (Nick) Zamantakis, Tony (Amy) Anast and their children, Makenzie Neath and grand-daughter, Ava; nephews, Pete Pappas, Mike (Katina) Pappas and their children, Panayota, Manoli, Yianni; and Gust’s furry family members, Mocha, Kahlua, and Nutmeg.
Gust is preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Melissa Anast; sister, Bessie Pappas Grillos; and brothers-in-law, Pete Pappas, and Steve Grillos.
The family wishes to extend their deepest heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the first responders, the staff of Castleview Hospital, Dr. Potter, Melodee and the staff at Parkdale Rehab and Care, Charity at Community Nursing Services, and Autumn, for their compassionate and devoted care shown to Gust.
The family also recognizes the skilled care of Dr. Ranjan, University of Utah Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr. Wada, Huntsman Cancer Clinic, and Dr. Barager, Revere Health Nephrology, in the treatment efforts of Gust.
