017-11

It was a busy weekend for Lady Dino softball. Starting on Friday when they traveled to Mount Pleasant for a region matchup with North Sanpete, Carbon had trouble finding their offense in the 3-2 loss. Saturday they were in Payson for tournament play going 1-3 on the day.

Carbon holds a 10-9 overall record but is 7-2 in Region 12 play. The Dinos sit at No. 6 in the latest RPI, with eight games remaining in the regular season.

Friday’s region tilt with North Sanpete was a low-scoring affair as neither side cracked the code so to speak, when it came to putting up runs. The Hawks got on the board first putting up one run to make the score 1-0 headed to the second. Carbon managed one run in the top of the third when Samantha Riddle sent a double to right field and found herself able to score due to a pair of errors to tie the game.

The score remained tied, as they headed into the eighth. Kylan Sorenson stepped up to the plate sending a pop fly to second and reached on an error, Shayla Penovich scored on the error getting the score to 2-1. North Sanpete was able to put together a small two-run rally to take the 3-2 win.

Riddle collected a pair of hits and a run scored. Danica Adams, Adri Abeyta, and Sorenson each had one hit with Sorenson adding an RBI.

Sorenson took the loss giving up six hits, two earned runs, and struck out 11.

On Saturday morning, the Lady Dinos traveled to Payson for a day of softball playing four games and taking a 1-3 record.

First up was the Morgan Trojans, who are currently the No. 2 team in 3A with a 12-5 record. This game was tough to crack for either team as the Trojans came away with a 2-1 win.

Morgan hopped on the scoreboard first taking a 1-0 lead after the top of the second. Carbon finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, when Brailee Peterson sent a grounder to the shortstop bringing Penovich home. Morgan added one more run in the top of the sixth to take the 2-1 win.

Peterson registered a hit and one RBI for the Dinos. Abeyta had a pair of hits and Taylor Secor and Adams each logged a hit in the loss.

Adams was in the circle taking the loss giving up three hits, and one run while striking out eight.

Next up was Springville the No. 3 team in 5A with a 15-4 record. The Red Devils jumped out quickly and handed the Dinos a 10-2 loss.

Before Carbon could get on the board in the top of the third, Springville was already up 7-0, when Brielle Sandoval stepped up to the plate and with a double to center drove in Abeyta, and Sorenson. The Red Devils would tack on three more in the bottom of the inning to hand the Dinos the 10-2 loss.

Sorenson and Sandoval each had two hits with Sandoval earning the only two RBIs for Carbon.

Adams got the start in the circle giving up two earned on one hit. Sorenson took the loss going 3.2 innings surrendering eight runs, three earned on five hits.

The host Payson Lions were the third team the Lady Dino would face. The 10-8 Lions also hold the No.9 spot in the 4A RPI.  Carbon was able to find their offense in the contest, but the Lions jumped out to an 8-1 lead early and were able to turn back the Dino rally, as Payson claimed the 10-8 win.

Payson was able to push the score to 10-2 when Carbon staged a bit of a rally in the top of the fourth. Sorenson would step up to the plate with two on and sent one over the center field wall to drive Kenlee Kennedy and Abeyta home. The Dinos added two more in the inning but it wasn’t enough to get the victory.

Sorenson had a pair of hits, three RBIs, and scored two runs. Abeyta earned two hits and an RBI also scoring a run. Riddle had a pair of hits and three RBIs and Secor had a pair of hits as well.

Adams took the loss for the Dinos going two innings and giving up eight runs, five earned on eight hits while striking out four. Sage Vea came in giving up two hits and two earned.

The last contest on Saturday for the Lady Dinos was the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs. Gunnison sits at 7-8 and holds the No. 9 spot in the 2A RPI. Carbon was able to collect their first win of the weekend behind a big third inning to take the 10-2 victory.

Heading into the top of the third, the Bulldogs had managed to tie things up 2-2, when Carbon came up in the bottom half of the inning everything changed.

With two outs and the score 4-2 Carbon, Penovich came up to the plate sending a double to center that drove in Adams and Riddle to push the score to 6-2. Carbon would add two more in the third and two more in the fourth to take the 10-2 win.

Adams had a pair of hits, scored two, and drove in two for the Dinos. Sandoval and Abeyta had two hits, two runs scored, and one RBI. Penovich registered one hit one run scored and had three RBIs. Eight Lady Dinos registered at least one hit in the win.

Sorenson got the win giving up four hits, two runs, one earned, and striking out three.
