This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Castle Heights Elementary and Principal Wendy Fluckey took time to speak over the telephone about what is taking place at the school.

“Hey things are going well, we’re just super busy with several activities going on and we just started our end-of-the-year state testing which will go on the next couple of weeks, depending on the grade level. We are preparing for Teacher Appreciation that’s coming up the first part of May. So we have lots of activities going on,” stated Principal Fluckey. This is a very busy time for the school with testing, field trips and assemblies.

The Knight’s Festival is an event that highlights academic success with students and this is the second year that the school has hosted the Knight’s Festival. “It’s put on to encourage students to read, so we have different reading challenges and academic challenges that students have to meet their grade level in order to receive coins in order to participate in the festival. My Instructional Coach, my aides, my teachers, then have different booths and it’s kind of like a carnival style activity that we did this year in the gym and the kids had a ball,” explained Principal Fluckey.

School attendance is very important and the numbers from first semester show that students were attending regularly. “We’re really excited, our first semester we had over 160 students that received a recognition award for having at least a 95 percent or high attendance rate. We’re tracking that for our second semester as well so I look forward to seeing those numbers going up,” said Principal Fluckey. She appreciates the students and parents for making the extra effort this year to attend school on a regular basis.

The administration is looking forward to seeing the overall scores from testing to see how students did this year so that they can begin preparing for next school year. “We kind of do that towards the end of May once we have all of our data in. What we do is we look at our data, we look at our goals, we look at improving not only in core areas of reading, math, science but also in attendance, in citizenship. We really do try to promote a good, positive, school environment and encourage kids to be their best,” said Principal Fluckey.
