Castle Country Radio sat down with Brandon Behling from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) to talk about what’s going on in the great outdoors in the Castle Valley Area. You could feel the excitement as Behling talked about the upcoming free fishing day on Saturday, June 8, and the antlerless hunt applications which are open from Wednesday, June 5 until Wednesday, June 19.
Starting with Free Fishing Day, Behling explained some details about the event,” Wednesday, June 8, is Free Fishing Day. So everybody that’s wanted to get out and get a line wet now’s your opportunity. All the rules and regulations are still in place, but you don’t have to have a fishing license.”
On a similar note to Free Fishing Day, Behling also talked about the forests in the area reopening, saying,” It seems like everyone’s favorite fishing spots are up in the mountains … I had the opportunity to talk to some anglers and from what they said the fishing was good everywhere we went.”
With the influx of people expected to be spending time around open bodies of water to avoid the summer heat, Behling talked about the importance of water safety and awareness.“Reservoirs are either spilling or almost ready to spill, so streams and creeks will be flowing a lot higher. So it’s important to practice stream and water safety.”
In our conversation, we also discussed how permit applications for antlerless hunts are opening up,” The antlerless application period is open from June 5 until June 18.” Behling also explained how to access this application,” If you’re interested, go to wildlife.utah.gov, click on the hunting tab and that will take you right to it.”
In closing, Behling shared this for the community,” Get out and enjoy our natural resources. Spend time with family and friends and be safe doing so.”
