On Friday, the Spartan baseball team made the trip to Roosevelt to face the Union Cougars for the second time in the week. The Spartans were looking to rectify the loss in the contest on Tuesday, but came up short, 9-4.

Opening up region play at home on Tuesday, Emery squared off with the Cougars, taking a 13-0 loss. The Spartans sit at 2-7 overall and 0-2 in region play. The baseball rankings will be released on Thursday, April 2.

Emery got started in the opening inning, putting up a run off a wild pitch that brought Beau Stilson home during a Tyce Larsen at-bat. Union would answer back and tie things up in the bottom half of the inning. The second inning was a carbon copy, with the Spartans scoring as Easton Stoker would cross home off an error in a Peyton Nielson at-bat, giving Emery a 2-1 advantage as the Cougars would once again tie things up at 2-2 heading into the third.

The Spartans went scoreless in the third, and the Cougars took advantage, putting up three runs to go up 5-2. Emery came up in the top of the fourth, and Peyton Nielson sent a single, reaching on an error by the first baseman that also allowed Trey Nielson to score. Emery came up again at the top of the seventh with Union up 9-3, and with two outs, Trygg Jensen sent one over the right field wall to get the Spartans to 9-4. The game for Emery would end as the next at-bat ended in an out, giving Union the victory.

With the home run, Jensen led the Spartans, going 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Stilson was 1-4, scoring one; Ben Johansen went 1-2, and Peyton Nielson was 1-4. Trey Nielson went 1-2, scoring one, and Stoker had one run in the loss.

Peyton Nielson got the start, going two innings with five runs, three earned on three hits, and struck out one. Garrett Conover came in and surrendered four runs, one earned, on one hit, striking out five. Jensen entered the contest, finishing the game with one strikeout.

Emery is back on the diamond on Monday to face Westlake on the road.
