The Emery Spartan baseball team was on the road Thursday, traveling to Beaver to take on the Beavers. Coming off three wins in a row, the Spartans were looking to continue that trend, but the Beavers had other plans as they closed out Emery in five innings, 12-2.
The Spartans had put together wins against North Sevier, South Sevier, and North Sanpete, and with the loss drops them to 5-12 overall this season, holding on to the No. 12 spot in the latest MaxPreps rankings.
The Spartans came up in the top of the first, and with two outs, Beau Stilson sent a single to the shortstop that brought in Ben Johansen to score, giving the Spartans the early 1-0 lead. The Beavers came back in the bottom half of the inning, putting six runs on the board to take the lead.
Neither team could plate runs in the second inning, and when Emery came up in the top of the third, Peyton Nielson would come up to the plate, and Trygg Jensen would score on a wild pitch during his at-bat. Nielson would eventually walk. The inning would come to an end, and three batters later, with the Spartans trailing 6-2. Beaver would add two runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to close out the Spartans 12-2 in five innings.
Jensen went 2-3 for the Spartans with a run scored. Johansen was 1-2, scoring the other run. Stilson and Garrett Conover each went 1-3 in the game, with Stilson adding an RBI in the loss.
Nielson got the start on the mound, giving up six earned runs on six hits and striking out one. Stillson came into the game and surrendered six runs, four earned, on four hits and struck out two. Tyce Larsen also put in time on the mound.
The Spartans get back on the diamond on Friday when the North Sanpete Hawks come to town. Emery will be looking for the season sweep of the Hawks after their 3-2 win in Mount Pleasant on Tuesday of this week. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
