The Emery Spartan baseball team welcomed the North Sanpete Hawks on Friday to Castle Dale. After taking a win from them earlier in the week, the Spartans were looking for the season sweep against a region foe, and though North Sanpete got on the board early, Emery came back in the final innings to take the 3-1 victory.
Emery is sitting at No. 11 in the latest rankings from MaxPreps, with a 6-12 overall record and five games remaining this season.
Runs were at a premium in the contest, as North Sanpete got on the board in the top of the first, then the bats would go quiet for the next four innings as neither team could plate any runs in a game where both teams would combine for just seven hits.
In the bottom of the sixth, with one out and one on, Ben Johansen would score on an error when Trygg Jensen would reach on a bunt, and Jensen would advance to second on the same error. Things got crazy when Beau Stilson came up to the plate with two outs and two on. First, Jensen would make his way home; on an error by the third baseman, Nielson would make his way to second. Five pitches later, Nielson would score on another error by the third baseman to put the Spartans ahead 3-1. Emery would hold the Hawks off the scoreboard at the top of the seventh to get the victory.
Johansen, Jensen, and Stilson all went 1-3 in the game, with Johansen and Jensen each scoring one run for Emery. Nielson scored the other run, going 1-2 at the plate in the win.
Garrett Conover earned the complete game win on the mound, giving up one earned run on three hits, while he struck out 11.
Emery will face the Parowan Rams on the road for a doubleheader on Monday, then on Tuesday they will travel to Price for teh first of two contests with the Dinos; the other will be in Castle Dale on Friday.
