Looking to advance in the winners’ bracket of the 3A state baseball tournament, the Carbon Dinos challenged the Grantsville Cowboys on Tuesday, May 12. Carbon claimed a 4-0 lead early in the contest, but a late-inning rally by the Cowboys powered Grantsville to a 6-4 win.
Carbon found themselves on the board first in the top of the second, with senior Logan Bennett sending a screaming line drive to left field, bringing home Jackson Basone and Paxton Falk in the process to claim an early 2-0 advantage.
The Dinos doubled down at the top of the third, with Brody Ware mirroring the earlier action of Bennett by sending a shot into left field that allowed two runners to cross home plate as runs from Maddux Wilson and Jordan Nichols elevated Carbon to a 4-0 lead.
Down but not out, Grantsville started their comeback in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs of their own to cut the deficit in half heading into the fourth.
The bottom of the fourth marked a turning point for the Cowboys, scoring four runs to claim a 6-4 lead over the Dinos. Grantsville would maintain this lead for the remainder of the game, securing the victory and sending Carbon to the one-loss bracket.
For the Dinos, Bennett led the way on offense, collecting three hits and two RBIs. Ware was credited with a single hit and a pair of RBIs, and Jackson Basone added two hits and scored a run.
On the mound, Xander Pappas got the start for Carbon, surrendering six hits and six runs, four of which were earned, while striking out four over four and two-thirds innings.
The loss moves the Dinos into the one-loss bracket, where they now await a showdown with a familiar postseason foe in the Logan Grizzlies. That game is set for Wednesday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah.
Live pregame coverage of the contest will begin at 10:45 a.m. on KOAL 107.3 FM & 750 AM, as well as an audio stream available on YouTube at Castle Country Radio – Carbon.
