The Lady Dinos softball squad took to the field on Tuesday afternoon in Spanish Fork, facing a familiar foe, their cross-county rival, the Emery Spartans. In a slugfest in which the two teams combined for 23 hits and 29 runs, Carbon came up on the short side, falling 18-11 and ending their season.
The Dinos entered the games on Tuesday, not knowing who they would face. They had to wait for the result of the Grantsville-Emery game, knowing they would play the loser of that matchup.
The Lady Dinos came up in the first inning and started with a lead-off single by Alexa Jones. After Aleece Ardohain walked, Brailee Peterson was hit by a pitch. Shayla Penovich came to the plate with the bases loaded and sent a single to center, bringing in Ardohain and Jones to put Carbon on top 2-0. The Lady Dinos would score once more in the inning when Bella Nelson sent a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Peterson to score to cap the inning off with Carbon up 3-0.
After a big second inning from the Spartans, the Lady Dinos came up in the third down 8-3 when a single from the bat of Kennlee Kennedy brought in Peterson and Penovich to score to get the Dinos closer at 8-5. Later in the inning, Andie Wood would hit a ground ball and reach on an error by the second baseman, scoring Kennedy, and then the next batter up was Kadence Vea. During her at-bat, Bella Nelson would score to put the Dinos down by just one, 8-7.
Carbon came back up in the fourth, and with two outs, Penovich would single on a fly ball that would drive Ardohain in on the throw to tie the game up at 8-8. Next batter up was Kennedy, and Penovich would score to give Carbon the one-run edge.
The Lady Dinos would come up in the seventh after being held scoreless in the previous two innings and staring at an 18-9 deficit. With two outs on the board, Josie Vea would come up to the plate and, during her at-bat, a steal of second by Wood opened the door for Sienna Alderson to score on an error. Vea sent a single to left, bringing Wood into score, putting the Dinos down 18-11, but after a pair of walks, Peterson would ground out, ending the contest with the Lady Spartans taking the win.
Penovich would go 3-4 in the game with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Lady Dinos. Wood was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Kennedy went 1-2 with two RBIs and scored one run in the loss.
Josie Vea got the start on the mound, going 3 1/3 innings. Giving up nine runs, five earned on seven hits, and striking out one. Kadence Vea went 2 2/3 with nine runs, three earned on six hits, and struck out three.
The Lady Dinos ended the 2026 season with a record of 8- 20 overall. Check back with Castle Country Radio in the coming weeks for a recap of the entire 2026 campaign.
