
On Saturday, the Carbon Dino boys volleyball team traveled to Ogden to take on the Ben Lomond Scots in the opening round of the 3A State Championships. Both teams were evenly matched, and it came down to a fifth and deciding set as the Dinos claimed the victory, 3-2, to move on in the tournament.
Carbon entered the postseason with a 6-15 overall record, holding on to the No.9 spot in the final rankings. Ben Lomond came in with a 5-12 record and sat at No. 8.
The match was a battle from beginning to end, with Carbon taking set one, 25-15. The Scots battled back and took Carbon by the score of 26-24 in set two. The Dinos would roar back in set three to take a 25-16 win, but then Ben Lomond would tie the match up with a set four victory 25-19. Carbon closed out the match with a win in set number five, 15-13, to take the 3-2 victory in the match.
Kyler Orth collected 19 kills and 17 digs for Carbon, and Carter Warburton had 17 kills and 15 digs. Grant Mathis handed out 29 assists, and Bryken Preston had 16 assists in the win.
Next is a matchup with the No. 1-seeded Ogden Tigers on Friday in a quarterfinal match at Utah Valley University. A win advances the Dinos to the semi-finals, and a loss would drop them into the consolation bracket, where the best they could do is finish fifth overall.
