The Carbon boys’ volleyball squad started the 3A State Championships on Friday at Utah Valley University, taking on the No. 1 seed Ogden Tigers, falling in straight sets, and moving into the consolation round. In the opening game of the lower bracket, they faced the Grantsville Cowboys and earned a spot in the fifth- and sixth-place game against Manti. Against the Templars, they would come up just short, closing out their season in sixth place.

In the match with Ogden, the Tigers took over, closing out the set 25-11.  In set two, the Dinos battled, but the end result was the same: a 25-11 loss. The third, and what would become the final, set was the most competitive but ended in a 25-18 Tiger victory.

Carter Warburton had 10 kills and seven digs for Carbon. Grant Mathis had six digs, and Bryken Preston had 10 assists in the loss.

The Dinos faced the Grantsville Cowboys at noon on Friday. They would battle through two sets with the Dinos collecting the win.

The pair would battle through set one with Carbon taking a 25-21 in set one. Set two was just as heated, but the Dinos took a 25-23 win, getting the 2-0 match victory.

Kyler Orth collected six kills and 10 digs for the Dinos. Carter Warburton had six kills, and Ridge Christensen had six kills and three blocks.

Next up, and bright and early Saturday morning, the Dinos would face the Manti Templars in the fifth and sixth place game. In another hotly contested match, Manti edged Carbon in two sets to take fifth place in the Championships.

The first set was one that neither team was willing to let go of, but the Templars edged Carbon 26-24. The second set was more of the same, but the Templars pried away the 25-23 victory to take the match 2-0.

Warburton had six digs and five kills for the Dinos. Orth had five kills to go with eight digs and a block, Mathis had five kills, and Dylan Black had nine digs. Preston had 15 assists in the loss.

Carbon ended the season in sixth place with an 8-17 record.
