The Desert Thunder Raceway will be back in action Friday, July 14 and 15 with the second of three sets of races during the 2017 calendar year.
Like the season opener, the second weekend will feature the International Motor Contest Association Modifieds (IMCA) as the main event. Also featured throughout the two-day event will be SportMods, stock cars, hobby stocks, mini stocks and trucks.
“We’ve got commitments from guys from Las Vegas, which will spice up the modified class,” said track owner Harvey Howard. “We have a group coming from New Mexico for the SportMods to challenge the Gray’s so that will be entertaining as well.”
The current IMCA Modified state standings have Chase Hansen, who delivered two top finishes at the Desert Thunder Raceway in May, at the top with 431 points. Regan Tafoya is in second with 370 points, followed by Kelly Smith and local driver Wyatt Howard. The next set of races will have a major impact on the current standings.
“It has implications for not only the local track championship, but also state, region and national points,” Howard said. “It is interesting because in Utah we’ve had eight different races and there has been five different main event winners.”
The track itself will host three sets of races with the final set taking place in September. The first resulted in a success back in May.
“Everything went good. The racing was good and we didn’t have a lot of crashes,” said Howard. “The racing was fast, close and we had three to four wide experiences. That’s always good for the spectators.”
The action on both Friday and Saturday is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., with the gates scheduled to open at 4:00. Family passes will be available at the gates for $25.00, while adults are $8.00 on Friday and $10.00 on Saturday. Children 6-12 will be $6.00 on Friday and $8.00 on Saturday. Pit Passes are available for $15.00.
