The Carbon County Sheriff Search and Rescue team annual Demolition Derby was a huge success this year. The event brought in many community members which helped raise funds for the team’s expenses that occur during the year.

“I want to thank our community and all the community partners that help us with our Carbon County Search and Rescue Demolition Derby, we had a blast this year,” stated Sheriff Jeff Wood. “We wouldn’t be able to operate Search and Rescue without that fundraiser and we did make decent month this year again and next year will be even bigger and better. Despite the raining weather drivers found that to be somewhat of a benefit inside the arena. There were forty cars total that registered for the event which is the biggest number of participants.

Spectators who braved the weather conditions were treated to a great show. “We figured out ways to do it where we can get home at a decent hour, it’s still a fun family event. There’s good food there and your home by 11 o’clock and to get that many cars through by 11:00 pm is a feet.” Organizers were pleased with the event and look forward to next year.

Community members have showed interested in how the hiring process for road deputies at the Sheriff’s office is determined, Wood explains, “So if you’re in a county that has more than 20,000 people or 20,000 people or more, you have to go through a merit system, so we have a merit board. Our merit board consists of Scott Young, Ed Chavez and John Daniels.” Individuals have to go through a physical as well as a written test, plus an interview. The board takes that information and ranks everyone on the roster, so when the time comes to hire a road deputy the Sheriff looks at the top three on the list for a fair and equitable decision.
