A year after finishing second place at the 2A State Championship, the Emery boy’s cross country team captured the 3A State Championship Wednesday afternoon at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.

Four individuals landed in the top 18 and another finished at 21 as the Spartans ended tied with the Richfield Wildcats for first overall. The tie-breaker was determined by each team’s sixth place runner, which favored Emery as junior Chase Christiansen finished 6.1 seconds ahead of Richfield’s Treyson Hansen.

Senior Tanyon Allred finished 8th overall with a time of 16:40.2, just topping freshman teammate Bryar Meccariello’s 9th place finish and time of 16:46.6. Junior McKay Meccariello ended in 14th at 17:00.8, followed by sophomore Griffin Livingston in 18th at 17:17.0. Senior Ty Funk registered the fifth team score with a 21st place finish at 17:20.4.

Richfield’s top placers ended the three-mile race in 5th, 11th, 12th, 15th, and 27th. The combined score gave Richfield a final tally of 70, 13 points better than third place Morgan. Grantsville and Grand rounded out the top five against 11 competing schools.

The state championship comes just eight days after the team finished second at the Region 15 championship in Blanding. Allred improved his region time by over a minute for Wednesday’s finale.
