A lack of daylight cut the Emery Spartans seventh inning rally short, leading to a 10-6 loss at the hands of the Gunnison Bulldogs on the road Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing 10-2 heading into the final frame, the Spartans scored four runs and had bases loaded with two outs as senior Easton Gordon stepped to the plate. The umpire ruled there was not enough daylight to continue the game, ending it in favor of Gunnison.
Emery struggled to find consistency at the plate registering just four hits throughout game. Limited to just two extra base hits, patience at the plate led to ten walks.
Senior Colton Willson accounted for three of the Spartans four hits, ending 3-4 with a double at the plate. Jesse Barnett registered the team’s other hit, finishing 1-2 with a double and two RBI.
Junior Logan Healy pitched 4.2 innings allowing four walks, and striking out six. Jace Collard worked 1.1 frames, allowing four earned runs to go along with one strikeout.
Tuesday’s season opener is the first of five games this week for the Spartans. The team will next participate in a pre-season tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Mesquite, Nev.
Tuesday the Spartans will host the first home tilt of the season in the Region 15 opener against the Grand Red Devils.
