On April 18 the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office and other local law enforcement were involved in an Active Shooter Drill at Carbon High School. It was a chance to concentrate on the inner workings and responsibilities that each officer would have if it were a real-life scenario. This mock drill would not have been possible without assistance from other departments.

“We invited all the local agencies to participate in our drill at the high school, it was an active shooter drill. We had a pretty good turnout – we had AP&P there, Price City Police was there, Carbon County Sheriff’s Office was there and that was pretty much the law enforcement. We had ambulance and fire and the hospital all involved,” stated Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood. Overall the exercise went well especially giving officers a chance to work on their tactics while school was not in session. Although, there were a few student volunteers that assisted coordinators with the active shooter drill on this day. In the future, there will be other drills conducted when school is in session.

Sheriff Wood shared the importance of the active shoot drills, “The schools are a captive audience and we want our kids to know that this could happen. We pray that it never does and we hope that it never does and the odds are good that it may never happen. But we want to be ready when it does. But we also want to be ready for any major venue that we’re at. I mean we might be a Walmart, we might be a the hospital, we might be a concert at the fairgrounds – all these areas could be similar to what it is at the high school so the training we gain from that is invaluable, it’s amazing what we can get from doing that training.” Again, participating officers had the chance to work on their tactics from the time they received the call to when the active shooter was apprehended and in custody.
