
After coming off a home victory against San Juan last Monday, the Carbon Dino volleyball team took the majority of the week off and then traveled to St. George for the Dixie Flyer tournament. Only dropping two sets the entire weekend Carbon came home with a perfect 6-0 record.
Playing teams from the 2A, 3A and 4A ranks, Carbon welcomed all comers and dismissed them just as quick. The Dixie Flyer Tournament has been an early season staple for the program in the past, last season the squad compiled a 5-2 record.
The first match of the weekend for Carbon was against 2A Beaver. Dispatching them in three sets 25-23, 25-17 and 25-11. Leading the way for the Dinos was Emma Christensen with 21 digs and 17 kills. Katie Jones added 21 digs and Lyndee Mower added 10 kills. Makenna Blanc registered 32 assists in the match as well.
Up next was the 4A Grantsville Cowboys in what was possibly the most challenging match of the weekend for the Dinos. Going five sets these two teams pushed each other the whole game. Carbon won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-13. The Cowboys would take the next two sets with an identical score 25-23 and Carbon would come back and take the final set 15-12. Christensen once again led the Dinos in digs and kills with 29 and 13. Sydney Orth also had seven kills and Makenna Blanc added 26 digs and 25 assists.
In the final match of the first day the Dinos would face the Pinview Panthers a 4A team from St. George. Once again Carbon made quick work of the Panthers with a 25-19, 25-21 and 25-18 straight set victory. Katie Jones ended day one with 24 digs. Emma Christensen added 12 kills and Makenna Blanc collected 19 digs and 13 assists.
In the first match on Saturday morning Carbon faced 1A Water Canyon, from Hilldale. Water Canyon lost to eventual 1A State Champion Panguitch in the quarterfinals of last years playoffs. It was a new day but same result as the Dinos won in straight sets once again 25-17, 25-20 and 25-18. Emma Christensen scored 17 digs and 11 kills in the match. Lyndee Mower and Katie Jones each had 12 digs with Mower also adding 8 kills. Makenna Blanc added 24 assists.
Game two would put Carbon up against the Cedar Reds, a 4A team from Cedar City. Once again the Dinos came out swinging winning the first set 25-14. The final two sets were a bit tighter but Carbon claimed victory in those as well 25-22 and 27-26. Christensen collected 18 digs as well as 10 kills in the match. Mower went for nine kills, Katie Jones added 15 digs and Makenna Blanc had 22 assists.
In their final match of the tournament the Dinos would take on a familiar foe the Juab Wasps. The Dinos took the first set 25-20. The second set was almost identical with the final score of 25-19 and in the final set the Dinos found a way to put the Wasps away 27-26, completing a perfect sweep in the tournament. Katie Jones collected 24 digs in the match. Emma Christensen and Lyndee Mower collected 21 digs each while Christensen added 16 kills. Janzie Jensen had 6 kills and Makenna Blanc added 25 assist.
Up next for the Dinos will be a road contest on Tuesday against the Richfield Wildcats. They will the play the Emery Spartans at home on Thursday night. Game time for varsity is scheduled for 6:30.
