A dominating second half performance propelled the Emery Spartans to a 38-7 win over the South Sevier Rams Friday night in a Region 12 contest in Castle Dale.

Holding a 10-7 lead at the end of the first half, the Spartans scored 28 unanswered between the third and fourth quarters to pull away for a third straight victory.

Junior Jace Curtis scored the first touchdown of the game, breaking a scoreless tie on a 54-yard run with 2:36 to play in the opening quarter. The 7-0 advantage for the Spartans would carry over into the second quarter.

Emery would increase its lead to two scores as Koalton Curtis converted his first field goal of the season, connecting on a 30-yard try.

South Sevier wasted little time responding to the 10-point deficit. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Jaxin Torgerson exploded through the middle of the field to score on a 73-yard touchdown run. Following the extra point, South Sevier entered the break down 10-7.

Holding just a three-point advantage, the second half belonged to the Spartans. Forcing a turnover on the opening drive of the third quarter, Emery quickly increased the lead to nine points as quarterback Ryker Jensen scored on a five-yard touchdown run. From that point on the defense continued to set the tone.

Following another turnover the Spartans capitalized as Jensen found Josh Olsen on a 22-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 24-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Olsen would find the end zone once again, but this time on the defensive side of the ball. Picking off a pass from South Sevier quarterback Carter Abraham, Olsen returned it 30-yards for a touchdown to seemingly put the game out of reach.

Emery would find the end zone one last time as Jensen fired his second touchdown pass of the game, this time to senior Quintin Sorensen. Up 38-7, the final three minutes of the game were a mere formality for the red hot Spartans.

Now 5-3 overall on the season and 3-0 in Region12 play, the Spartans have won three consecutive games, their longest winning streak since 2010. With only two games remaining in the regular season, Emery joins Richfield as the only unbeaten teams in the region.

Emery will now prepare for a road contest with Richfield on Friday, Oct. 9. With both teams still unbeaten, the winner will be in the driver seat to claim a region championship.

Following Friday’s victory head coach Jon Faimalo joined the broadcast booth on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM. Listen to the complete interview below:
