
The Carbon Boys Basketball team will live to play another day after a thrilling double overtime win against the North Sanpete Hawks in the second round of the 3A State Championship Tournament. Playing on their home court the Dinos carried a 36-25 lead going into the fourth and that’s when it got interesting and after two overtime periods Carbon came out on top 71-64.
The Dinos dominated this game early on taking a 27-15 lead to the locker room. The lead would be nine at the end of three headed in to the final quarter. With 1:00 left in regulation Carbon held a seven point lead at 47-40. The Hawks would outscore the Dinos 9-2 in the final :60 to tie the game up sending it in to the first overtime period.
When it looked like the Hawks were about to end the season for the Dinos, Preston Condie who scored a game high 30 points, hit the biggest shot of his night with a three- pointer with one second left to send the game into double overtime where Carbon put together a defensive effort allowing North Sanpete only two points and allowing Carbon to advance with the victory.
Senior Keenan Hatch scored 14 points while pulling down eight rebounds, senior Caleb Winfree added 12 and senior Noah Bradford went for 11. Condie also pulled down 10 boards.
For the Hawks Landon Bowles led the team with 17 , Trevin Morley dropped 14 and Brady Jacobson 12 in the loss.
The Dinos will now look forward to Thursday February 25 when they will face the No. 1 Grantsville Cowboys in the quarterfinals of the State Championship Tournament at the Sevier Valley Center on the Snow College Richfield Campus. Grantsville defeated the Emery Spartans on Friday night to advance.
